         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The Situation: </strong> In a grade 12U biology class, while reading and working through a chapter from our textbook on homeostasis and the endocrine system, the students and the teacher came across a problematic passage.  The passage discusses a noted epidemic of Type 2 diabetes amongst Indigenous people to this land.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Action: </strong>Students and teacher embarked on a mission to “spot the rat” or in other words - detect omissions, deletions, errors and missing perspectives that maintained a (not so) quiet negative, stereotyped view of Indigenous peoples in Canada.</div><div><br>  <strong>Critical Discussion Questions</strong></div><ul><li>What explanation was given for the Diabetes crisis within Indigenous communities?</li><li>Which point of view does this analysis come from?</li><li>What point of view is not heard/represented?</li><li>What information was left out of this explanation?</li><li>What biases can you detect in this passage?</li><li>What stereotypes are reinforced in this article?</li></ul>]]></description>
