They were already fighting in the Vietnam war when this began. Prince Sihanouk and his people didn't get too involved in the Vietnamese war. Lon Nol was connected with the US during the Vietnam war so they started fighting on Cambodian land.Lon Nol was defeated by Pot Pol who was the leader of the communist organization

However, everyone was fed up with the vietnam war and how many lives were lost in Cambodia’s connection with the US under Lon Nol, so they sided with Pol Pot. Pol Pot proposed “new hope and national tranquility”. A mid class leader of khmer rouge said to the people, “to spare you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss”.

Life under the Khmer Rouge was harsh, and consisted of people having to do forced labor, mainly on farms. People who were not fit to work, or did their work poorly, would be killed, along with people who disobeyed commands. People had to evacuate their cities and homes, and people were separated from their families. All rights and valuable items were disregarded. People and families would die from abuse, starvation/dehydration, exhaustion, and disease. There were killing fields, where people were taken to be tortured and killed.
