The reason I chose this quote was because many including myself and the author were not aware of their history and the struggles that their ancestors had to face. The first time I learned about Mexican-American history was last semester when I took my first CLS class. I was shocked and confused about why I was barely learning about this history for the first time. Throughout school I was taught "American" history but now looking back on it the narrative was never about Mexican Americans. They never mentioned the Bracero Program or the Zoot Suit Riots and the history that was taught like the Mexican-American War was brief and always seemed to favor the American perspective. For the first time I was able to learn about my history from the perspective of my ancestors. I was able to learn about their stories, their struggles and as well as their victories. With this new knowledge I was able to gain a new understanding and appreciation for myself and my heritage very similarly to the author. However it also made me more aware of the struggle and discrimination that my ancestors had to face.

I chose this citation because I grew up surrounded by people who were afraid to embrace their differences. Some were bullied for their differences and others chose to embrace the jokes and laugh along. The ones who embraced them came out happier in the end and took the power away from the bullies. One of my best friends used to be like this and that inspired me to become who I am today. I am not sure what changed, but one day, she stopped laughing. It was hard to see, but ever since then I have tired to help her and I hope it has made a difference. We should be giving power to our differences, not to the people who choose to put us down for them.

I choose this quote because it reminded me of when I recently watched a movie based on a true historical event that led to independence. Through the movie, I was able to learn and become thankful for sacrifices that true historical figures have made to fight for independence. The struggles and the fights that people had to face made me realized how much of a big accomplishment that they have made for our generations. I think this quote reminds us that we get to live a grateful life due to the war that our people fought for us.

I chose this quote because I think that everyone has their own story. I think it is very unique that we all come from different backgrounds and different ways of living and this quote shows how we can each be a storyteller or have our own story and own imagination. We all have our own imagination to how to express what is on our mind. I chose because it shows how much of what could be in ones story. It is a bit more imagination but this also represent a story that one could tell.

And certainly there are very real differences between us, of race, sex, age sexuality, class vision. But it is not the differences between us that tear us apart, destroying the commonalities we share.

Being different doesn't mean it's a bad thing; it's just that you're a person with different ideas and creativity. I also learned this in my marketing class about becoming a great leader. There might be entirely strict leaders on top of their game, but that doesn't mean you have to mimic how they are as a boss. You can work your way up in a different form to become a leader with different characteristic traits and goals. However, being different brings people to acknowledge your creativity and how you stand out from the crowd.

This section stood out to me because growing up I was looked at differently from others because I liked doing things that others didn't. But I later realized and embraced that there is nothing wrong with being different. Being different is what makes us who we are. This stood out to me because as a really good listener, I’ve listened to many people tell me their stories and experiences. Their pain and sorrows, anything and everything. I can tell it brings happiness to them and even a sense of relief like freedom. As well as I, when I express my experiences sometimes. Although the freedom and happiness feels temporary to me because I tend to keep to myself. The sentence is very true, but storytelling can also be a metaphor of one’s life as a book. Which shapes each and everyone of us. I seem to connect easily with others so I’m able to be there for them and set them free I guess in a way, so I’ve been told. While I don’t seem to escape or maybe I do, but just for a second. For this reason I chose that part, it’s how our narratives and perspectives of life are.

I chose this quote because I feel no student should be told that there is no available topic of Indigenous traditions. Every student should feel welcome especially when it comes to the topic of their people. Teachers should not bring down any students, teacher should uplift them and try to talk about the topic more. I feel everyone should learn of their own traditions.
