This semester was my first semester dealing with the Caribbean Civilization course. The amount of information that was given was truly interesting and it sparked interest from the beginning to the end ,being a revisionist course. One of the reasons why it eld my interest was the fact that I had to unlearn things that was taught at the CAPE Caribbean Studies level, one of them being that it is "a crime" to refer to the Neo-indians as Caribs and Arawaks. Another interesting about the course was that i was able to intereact with persons from other countries and learn about their countries. Overall, the Caribbean Civilization experience was a good one although the test aspect of it, for me, devalued the course as it was always at the back of my mind that assignments needed to be done so that I can pass the exam. Other than that the knowledge that i acquired from this course would allow me to understand the history of the Caribbean a lot better and show a measure of appreciation for the present day Caribbean Civilization. I would recommend doing this course (even though it is mandatory for some students) because i truly learnt a lot.

Issue In Religion

In the article presented below, Archbishop Joseph Harris of Trinidad and Tobago, sent in his leter of resignation. The general reason for his resignation is crime and its conterparts. The move of resignation may be seen as a lack of faith in the country in its respponse to crime as he does not seem to be in agreement with reinstating the death penalty. Religion was one of the instruments for controlling the masses and being a socialising agent as it was meant to make citizens more compliant to authority as well as having a reverence for God. However modern day society is slowly drifing away from having reverence for God as well as there is a rise in lawlessness in all its forms. Thus this indicates that religion is losing its power and the measure of control it had on the masses a time ago. Also, his resignation could create a sense of hopelessness for those who believed in him as he is the reperesentative of the pope and the Roman Catholic.

Religion and Ethnicity

The picture presents some classmates of different ethnicities. The one of Chinese decent belongs to the Catholic community. This is a clear example of religion in the Caribbean not being bound to one ethnicity as the stereotype may cause one to believe that he is from the Buddhist comunity. It must be noted that Catholicism in the caribbean came with the arrival of the Spanish. The guy of East Indian decent is a muslim and the is an example of cultural preservation as Hinduism and Islam were brought with the Indentured labouers into the Caribbean. The Caucasian guy also represent preservation of Eurpoean culture as he belongs to the Catholic Commuity. The guy of African decent belongs to the Jehovah Witness community. This is an example of american imperialism in the form of religions where the American workers as well as soldiers brought their various religious beliefs to the Caribbean. However these various faiths that exist in the Caribbean is one of the reasons that countries like Trinidad and Tobago do not have an official religion. Hence this can contribute to the cultural identity of Trinidad and Tobago and in some regards the Caribbean as a whole.

In the picture, the building on the right is the San Fernando Boys' R.C School which was built in 1890 (as seen on the school sign). The building on the left is the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. The church existed from 1848. It must be noted that was a little after the emancipation period. This occured as the colonial powers at the time (the British) did not see it necessary to provide proper education for the former slaves hence other institutions grabbed the opportunity. As mentioned earlier, this is a boys school hence it could be seen that way back at that time education was more androcentric as it was the acceptd norm. It must be noted that the education a person recieved at that time and, in some regard in present time, focued on metroploitan aspects than a Caribbean aspects and this woul subliminally send a message that the metropole was the be all and end all. Additionally, the education of the masses was to produce a socierty that still could be controlled under religion which could arguably be said that relgion is another form of slavery as the end goal was always control.

This portfolio seeks to present some of the aspects learnt during the Caribbean Civilization course tenure. Religion in the Caribbean presents itself as unique as the manner in which it came to the Caribbean and it's evolution stands for itself. Thus, religion and it's relation with ethnicity, education, music as well as the problems facing religion will be discussed.
