Political parties started in Washington's first term as president. The two parties were made from different interpretations of the US constitution and economic and foreign policies. The two political parties that were created were the Federalist and the Democratic-republican. The Federalist were the followers of Alexander Hamilton and the Democratic-Republicans supported Thomas Jefferson's ideas about government. The federalist believed in a strong national bank, and has a looser interpretation of the constitution. The democratic-Republican party believed in strong state governments and had a stricter interpretation of the constitution.

Washington realized that any involvement with other countries would hurt the country more than it would benefit it. The still very young country could not afford to get involved in wars yet. In 1973 the french and the british started a war, and many americans wanted to help the france since they helped us in the revolution, but other americans felt closer economic and family ties to the british. Washington solved this issue by declaring the US neutral in that war. One issue between the US and the British was the british presence in the ohio valley river. In 1795, Jay's treaty was ratified, and british troops were required to withdraw form the U.s

In Washington's two terms as president, he created certain precedents that other presidents would follow, even though they were not the rule. One of these precedents was serving only two terms as president, and this rule would be followed until Franklin Roosevelt, who served 3 terms but died in the fourth. He also urged the nations leader to stay neutral, and this policy is kept into the 20th century. He also warned against political parties, but those started in his first term as president so we did not follow that rule, and he also said to keep the taxes reasonable.
