Over the years, I've connected with his many different music styles and personas at different points in time – his albums have come to symbolise different times in my life, different people I've been and different experiences I've had. There's a Bowie album for everybody and everything.

Bowie is more than just a musician – he's an icon. To understand Bowie, you have to look at the picture. He might be famous for his music, but he's also an actor in many great films, an artist, an intellectual (he read 3–4 books/week) and a fashion icon. His personas are the perfect embodiment of a convergence of music, art and fashion, which are all of the things I love and admire in other people.

He changed music. Bowie spearheaded the 1970s glam rock movement, which rose out of the ashes of late sixties psychedelia movement. By combining bubblegum pop melodies with a wider breadth of influences— anything from 50s RnB to hard rock—Bowie redefined the boundaries of pop music. After that, Bowie became interested in synthesis production and German experimental krautrock music, which he brought to a mainstream audience with the 'Berlin' trilogy. He then helped to bring publicity to the new romantics movement of the 1980s and the art rock movement with his hit song 'Ashes to Ashes'. Bowie continued to make records for his entire life, but his defining periods and biggest impact was undoubtedly during the 70s and 80s when Bowie was doing what he did best: making bold choices, and combing fashion, art and music into a single package.

He changed society. As the figurehead of the glam rock and new romantic movements, Bowie brought a lot of publicity to issues of gender fluidity, and self-expression through fashion and art. In particular, through his highly publicised relationships with other men and androgynous appearance, Bowie helped many young men come to terms with their own sexuality and helped to bring mainstream awareness these kinds of issues.

Use examples of artists to expand your argument and opinion. Don't forget a concluding sentence that restates and reinforces your opinion.

Discuss these questions with a partner before you start writing.
