I've been teaching English for 16 years. I have always wanted to make my subject attractive, motivating, easy to learn and I pay attention to engaging students into their own learning. I use lots of interactive activities in class, especially games, I alternate the whole-class approach with pair work and group work. I divise competitions between two teams - the students collaborate to get the answers correctly for their team while competing with the opposing team at the same time. I have used PBL in class. The most spectaculous I think was the Travel Agency Project, where students worked in groups to design a travel agency. They enjoyed the research part - collecting data for the agency - and the design part - they had to work out how to advertise their holidays. They were really creative and had fun. The final stage of the project was that students from other grades came to 'buy' trips and holidays from our 'Travel Agencies". The only backdraws of the project were that it had been time consuming and not all the resources needed were available. However, the activity was quite a success and students learned a lot, developing competences they need in their real life.

"Why is YOUR school the BEST school in town?" - I plan to implement a project with my 7th graders (pre-intermediate level) to design a video advertisement for their school. I'm planning to split the class in groups; each group is going to deal with all aspects (curriculum, labs, classrooms, gym, extra-activities, staff). In each group, the students will have specific roles (script-writers, presenters / actors, editors, sound 'engineers', camera operators) The clips are then put together in a video advertisment of the school. The resulted ads are uploaded on the school's Facebook page and voted by the public. This way, not only will I promote language learning and communicative functions such asking for / giving opinions, persuading, recommending, comparing and contrasting, etc. but also promote our school in the community.

Tell students what they are going to revise / consolidate and give out the printed material, if any. Draw on the board a number of stairs going up and then down. The number of steps depends on how much material you want to revise. Place the witch at one end of the stairs and the prince at the other end, while the princess should be on top of the stairs, next to the cauldron. Tell students they work in 2 teams, i.e. the witch against the prince, in order to get to the princess. Each correct answer allows them to climb one step up. Students write the correct sentences on the board/ in their notebooks.

Describe a situation in your professional or personal life where you were first unsuccessful but because you stuck with it you succeeded in the end - Skiing - definitely, that's it. I learnt how to ski at the age of 45. Couldn't hold myself on skiis the first time. Was mosly down. Kept falling. But I stuck to it! I really wanted to be able to ski and flow gently down the slope like the other skiers. Managed to do that two months and hundreds of falls later! I wanted to prove myself I am as good as anyone else on the slope. There isn't such a thing as 'I can't" in my vocabulary!

I think teachers should act mostly as monitors (after setting the task and giving clear explanation on what is to be learnt) and only when the students are stuck for a longer period on the task teachers can act as prompters - making sure to elicit the information from the students not to serve it directly. Thus, critical thinking and autonomy in learning is encouraged.
