Both the north and the south had interests and slavery either helped them or hurt them. It was in the South's best interest to keep slavery. and North wanted to get rid of it. When either side imposed on the other and tried to make slavery bigger or smaller the other, the other felt threatened, such as how the northerners felt threatened by southerners imposing on their interests in page 357 with the whole "Slave Power Conspiracy" or how getting rid of slavery would hurt the south's economy as see on page 358.

Settlement into new regions was like adding gasoline to the fire that was the issue of slavery. Since they were new states there was the question "Should they be free or slave states". Of course the southern states wanted the new states to be slave states and the northern states wanted them to free states, thus the sectional conflict grew. This tension can be seen growing through the "Kansas- Nebraska Controversy" on pages 355 and 356.

Since people were either classified as pro- slavery or anti- slavery, two distinct sides began to form (especially when deciding the fate of a new state). When violence began to ensue, the two regions took sides, creating another way for them to hate each other, such as "Preston Brooks and Charles Sumner" on page 357. Later, around the time of Lincoln's election, the binary thinking of the people along with the fact that the president was republican and anti-slavery was enough to start the process of disunion. This can be seen through the subtopic on "disunion" on page 361.

The anti-slavery and pro-slavery thought that their ideals made them superior, which was simply fueled by their way of life. The became prideful of their way of living and how slavery fit or didn't fit into it. This is shown through how the south slavery was just and their reasons for it being so ( because it supported their way of life) on page 358. The consequences were that they thought that they were better than the others and that their ideals needed to preside over everyone else. This, in short created sectional tension.
