on September 9, 1957, Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law that was proposed by Attorney General Herbert Brown-well. The act sparked the first occasion since reconstruction that the federal government undertook significant legislative action to protect civil rights. Established a civil rights division in the Justice Department. The act empowered government and federal officials to prosecute individuals that tried to deny any other citizens the right to vote. Created a 6- member U.S. civil rights commission that was charged with allegations and or voter infringement.
