In the United Kingdom, beauty standards are also influenced by Western media. Advertising often promotes slim bodies, clear skin, and fashionable looks. British media has been criticized for lack of diversity, but like in the U.S., there is a growing movement for inclusion. Campaigns such as Dove’s “Real Beauty” and other local brands have started showing real people with different body types, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities. Social media influencers also play a big role in shaping new beauty norms.

In the United States, body image and beauty standards are also heavily influenced by media and advertising, which historically promoted thin, tall, and mostly white models. Social media has both challenged and reinforced these norms. On one hand, platforms like Instagram and TikTok push beauty filters and trends that promote unrealistic looks; on the other, they also give visibility to body positivity movements and diverse representations. There is now more focus on inclusivity, with brands featuring people of different races, body sizes, and gender identities.

Both the U.S. and the U.K. share similar beauty ideals influenced by Western culture, focusing on thinness and perfection. However, both countries are also making efforts to show more diversity in body image through campaigns and media representation. The U.S. may have a larger, more visible body positivity movement, but the U.K. is following closely, especially with support from major brands and influencers.
