Today's Plan

AP Summer Reading Essay Assessment

1. On sticky note, take a moment to write down character names for your essay. You may NOT use your novel. You are not expected to use direct quotations in your essay, of course. Instead, you'll use paraphrases/summaries of specific references to novel to support your thesis.

2. Phones need to be stowed in backpacks please.

3. When you are finished, estimate how you think you did using rubric on back- I am using the rubric for assessment, but scaling (curving) it back-however; these essay grades will be lower grades for many- we have had lots of completion so far...

4. Make sure you write your name and class period on your essay and the prompt sheet and flip over at your desk when completely done.

Thesis Review:

Construct an strong thesis to guide your essay- the thesis should be:

*arguable, specific, a guiding force
*reasoning should be included
*complex sentence or linked sentences

(subordinate clauses: although, because, as, when, since...)
(linked: however, nevertheless, thus, ...

Here is the answer sheet to the Student Generated Participle Practice (Image Grammar Module)- How did you do?

Can you teach yourself the difference between a participle phrase and a gerund? A participle is a verb form that is functioning as an adjective in a sentence- whereas a gerund is a verb form that is functioning as a noun.

To make things a bit more sticky: sometimes participles can end in "ed"

1. Look through the last steps of the College Essay Module- the purpose of this unit was to help pace you and encourage you to achieve something quite personal: your college essay. I've said over and over that I'm flexible with process steps and their timing (as long as you complete steps). I’ve also been here for you if you needed help or feedback. I’ve also given you the space you need to do something that is very personal to you. The essay is due Friday (along with the rubric). If you are having a MELT DOWN, please come see me. We can make a plan for extra time. You can email me, too, but do that today!

IXL Diagnostic Test

Please work through the district's diagnostic test for English Language Arts. This test usually takes about 45 minutes, give or take. Once you finish, you can see your "grade levels" in each Language Arts Skill. Most students, even AP students, have gaps. Discover where your areas may be- IXL gives you a space to tighten some of these skills for college, too. If you fly through it easily, good for you, but I'm thinking many of you will be able to determine some areas for improvement.. Maybe!

2. Once there, click on orange "Go to Diagnostic" link
3. You will be invited to start diagnosing to reveal your levels- pick any skill to start!

After taking a full length, rigorous AP Multiple Choice Test as an individual, and studying the 8 categories of AP literary skills questions on the test as individuals, you- in a collaborative group- will “rework” your AP exam and help your group reach a consensus on what the best responses are for each question; you should all work together with the goals of learning from each other, improving your actual responses, meta-critically examining the format of the exam, and internalizing the literary skills included on the exam- all while being sure to value each other’s questions and opinions.

In addition, students will individually reflect and self assess on specific areas of improvement through their annotations on their test/answer sheet while in groups.
