My father was born in Caratinga, Minas Gerais. Even though his family has got the surname ‘Pires’ (children of the rocks; Pedro), his great grandfather was from Germany. My father used to tell me that his family’s first immigrants used Eckstein (From German eck meaning “edge, corner” and stein meaning “stone”) as their surname. However, he didn’t know why his family decided to change it.

My mother was born in Penedo, Alagoas. Her mother was born in Amazonas and sold to her husband. My grandfather was 40 years older than my grandmother and he was hired to kill people. My mother’s mother had a lot of babies but just two survived: my mother and my uncle. They went to Rio de Janeiro to run away from my grandfather, who wanted to kill them as well.
