How a game can enhanced teaching and learning?

- Create a sense of flow during game play.
- The research project has mainly focused on so-called serious games, which differ in general from the so-called ‘play and learn’ games in that they do not necessarily seek to entertain the children. The primary purpose of the serious games is learning, and these games are often research-based.
- A good way of supplementing the conventional teaching as game creates a strong desire to repeat or extend the experience of the gamer.

-Card Games: It teaches the players to follow a set of rules and use reasoning and analytical skills.
-Board Games: It teaches the players to win using strategies, counter strategies and sometimes even involve team effort.

What are the benefits of incorporating game elements in teaching and learning?

1. Significantly improve learning experience.

Study shows that people tend to learn more when it is made into a game

Where people strive their way to win while unintentionally learning along the way. Games create engaging scenario outside of the real world and inside of the virtual world in which people enjoy taking part and gives people motivation to win thus learn.

2. Bad consequences are rarely serious or lasting.

Educational learning rarely has an everlasting negative effect personally on a player. A player can start again and complete previous tasks as well as learning from mistakes as it is only in the virtual world.

3. Improve our attention span.

Attention span is the amount of concentrated time a person can spend on a task without becoming distracted. Most of us hard to concentrate 30-45 minutes especially in class. Study shows that games have that visual and audio elements that can attract human attraction furthermore it may stay longer in human’s mind. It also help students to be independent and confident.

Basically, our initial idea was to make another version of snake and ladder. We chose this because it is easier to understand as the rules are more or less the same. Hence, we cut down the hassle of explaining the rules later on.

08.40 am :: We arrived at the school 
08.45 am :: We started to give some briefing and class division for each team involved
09.00 am :: Ice Breaking with the students from class 6 Permata

Task ::
1. Divided the students (6 Permata) into two group since we had two board games *Refer Picture 1*
2. From the 2 group, then make into sub group which is 5 sub-group consist of 4 - 5 per group
3. They start playing with PIXEL board game. Each Representative of the group then throws the die to set the sequence of player *Refer Picture 2 & Refer Video 1*
4.
i. If the player counter lands on a question mark sign, they need to answer a question from the card.
ii. The questions are based on 2 chapters from Science subject which is constellation and solar system
iii. We apply the QR code system on the Card. By scanning the card using QR Scanner, we got the access the answer of the question and Malay Language version of the question *Refer Picture 3 & Video 2*
iv. We also imply audio (VOICE CLUE) attachment in this game. If the player counter lands on a planet sign, they will be giving chance to hear a voice clue regarding the location of the astronaut.
v. The audio has a glitch sound effect to give more realistic effect. This is the new improvement of the game since the first visit at the school *Refer voice clue attachment*
vi. After finishing the game, we interviewed the student to get the feedback on how to improve our board game *Refer Picture 4 & Refer Video 3*

We managed to do the public test with much success!!! We invited our friends to try our board game and in return they gave their honest feedbacks about it. We originally have to do it outside but due to heavy rain, we moved our settings to Dewan Mutiara. Thank you to all participants for their cooperation and feedbacks ❤️

Summary:
Comparison of user experience between multiplayer digital games and board games is largely unexplored in the literature, with no instrument found to suitably measure user experience across game formats. This study explores the use of the Social Presence module of the Games Experience Questionnaire to measure user experience in a multiplayer board game involving 12 participants across 3 separate sessions. Scale analysis and correlation with semistructured interviews held with the participants suggest that the instrument is reliable and valid and can thus be used for measurement and comparison of user experience across game formats. The Games Experience Questionnaire can therefore be used to scale-up board game research by diminishing reliance on interviews as well as to assist in the choice between digital and nondigital implementation of gameplay forming part of an overarching story, such as in transmedial productions.

Summary:
The study examined effects of playing number games (linear number board game, circular number board game, and nonlinear numerical activities) on the development of number knowledge and early arithmetic. A passive control group was also included in the design. A total of 114 five years old preschool children participated. Four tasks (number line estimation, counting, naming Arabic numbers, and arithmetic calculation) were used as dependent measures. Children assigned to an intervention participated in six 10-min sessions during a period of three weeks. Children playing the linear number board game improved their performance on the number line estimation task, while children playing the other games did not. Furthermore, children playing the linear number board game showed a substantial enhancement of their calculation performance. The positive effects of playing linear number board games support the representational mapping hypothesis. The finding concerning calculation provides support to the assumption that a linear representation is important for early arithmetical learning.

Summary:
Most research on game making activities for learning has focused on programming screen-based designs. Only recently has research begun to include the design of tangible interfaces; connecting on-screen programming with hands-on crafting. In this paper, it examine the potential of a workshop that combines the high and low of technology with game design in which teams of high school youth crafted, coded and collaborated on their own augmented board games to highlight intersections between learning programming and making, and creating across digital and tangible modalities. The focus of the analysis are mostly of students' projects, interactions, and reflections on how young designers conceptualized the integration of screen and board game elements, realized computational concepts and practices in their board game designs and augmentations, and reflected on their game design experience connecting crafting and coding.

Summary:
There are lots of way in engaging the students in learning including using games and play.The idea of playing games is not effective to teachers as a teaching and learning method.The board games, if aligned with the national curriculum and relevant learning objectives can be effective and meaningful.This journal study about the use of SMARTies, a formative testing tool designed in a form of a board game, as an alternative teaching and learning aid for the language classroom. Thirty voluntary students were involved in this study. Respondents were required to sit for a pre-test and post-test to monitor their achievement. A survey questionnaire was also used to find out about their attitudes and beliefs relating to using board games for language learning. The results showed that students had positive attitudes towards the use of SMARTies.

Summary:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the board games on mathematical spatial ability of grade 9 students. The experimental is divided into two group which is control group and experimental group. In this experiment, is use implementation/non-implementation of board game activity teaching as the independent variable to investigate the influence of application of board games on mathematical spatial ability of grade 9 students in junior high school. Before the implementation of the experiment, this study used spatial ability scale to perform the pretest. After the implementation of the experiment, this study used spatial activity scale to perform the posttest. The research results showed that board game teaching improves students’ learning effectiveness of spatial ability and improves students’ learning interest in spatial ability.
