<title>Writing can be incorporated into all areas of curriculum. It can be used as a tool for learning or to demonstarte what students have learned.</title>

         <title>In teaching students through writing, teachers use can use various tools such as &quot;clustering&quot;, &quot;double-entry journals&quot;, &quot;K-W-L Charts&quot;, &quot;learning logs&quot;, and &quot;semantic feature analysis&quot;.</title>

<title>I believe clustering would be a good tool to use in teaching science. Once a  lesson had been taught students can put a key word in the center such as &quot;volcanoes&quot; and then write down various facts they have learned about them. </title>

<title>I also really liked the idea of the &quot;semantic feature analysis&quot; and have never heard of this type of technique before. Creating this type of grid in order to analyze different words (on the vertical axis) and various characteristics (on the horizontal axis) requires a great deal of critical thinking on the part of the students. This is a great tool especially for nonfiction topics in order to get students to compare and contrast different groups and features.</title>

<title>Writing to demonstrate learning can be done in response to books or other readings students have completed, can be done in response to different thematic units, and can be done through incorporating multiple genres.  </title>

<title>When discussing using writing in response to literature, I loved the idea of book boxes. I feel this is a way to bring books to life and also teaches students how to evaluate symbols in literature.</title>

<title>I also really liked the &quot;Open-Mind Portraits&quot; and I think this would be a good project to use with ESL students because they can still demonstrate their comprehension of a book through drawings if they are struggling with writing.</title>

<title>I love the idea of using writing to help show what students have learned in thematic units. Often too much emphasis is put on multiple choice tests when assessing for learning in courses such as science, social studies, and other subjects. By using writing and writing projects it allows students to show what they know in a more open-ended way and also makes completing the assessments fun. </title>

<title>I believe students would love the &quot;Cubes&quot; activity. This activity allows them to work in groups to explore a given topic. Each group is given either the job of &quot;describing it&quot;, &quot;associating it&quot;, &quot;contrasting it&quot;, &quot;analyzing it&quot;, &quot;applying it&quot;, or &quot;arguing for or against it&quot;. Then they have to write up about a paragraph on the topic given their certain criteria and then (what I think is the most fun part) put it on the side of a large cube. I think this activity makes learning really fun and leaves the class with a finished product (the cube) that they can refer back to as a refresher on the given topic.  </title>

<title>I also believe it is a really good idea to include multiple genres when students are completing a project on a thematic unit. By performing a variety of different tasks students learn so much more on a topic then they could with just one given genre or project. I really liked the example of the &quot;Honeybee&quot; multigenre project in the book. All the different projects that were completed were placed on a large poster board which was placed in the classroom so students could refer back to it. They created &quot;True or False&quot; flip books, advertisements, and poems just to name a few of the genres. I believe this type of activity is so amazing because it allows all students&#39; strengths to be highlighted when trying to show the teacher what they know.  </title>
