I chose the colors that I did because they were the colors of the original shapes (although I changed one because I liked purple better than yellow). I struggled with creating shadows that weren't patchy because i struggled with controlling the water color. I had similar problems controlling the paint on the shapes as well.

Watercolor Still Life - Toned Paper

For my toned paper still life, I chose one of my dads artistic mugs and a book to set it on. I tried my best to get the colors exact on the paper, but they are a little off. I also struggled with the toned paper background because I messed up and had to repaint the background. I also could've added more darks and lights to make it look more realistic.

I chose to do a picture that I had taken myself. It was hard to accomplish because I am not very good at drawing buildings, and this building had very intricate details and big roofs. Also, the building is all one color, so it was also difficult to shade with variations of one color. I also had problems with the paper ripping up and ‘erasing’ color if I went over it with water. I think out of all my watercolor paintings, this is the best, however I could have done better had I picked something that didn’t have a building.

Acrylic Still Life

For this project I painted an orange stuffed animal and a plastic pear. For the background I chose to go with blue, since the stuffed animal was orange (wanted to have the cow toy pop against the background). I shaded the cow using reddish oranges, and browns. I struggled with this project for multiple reasons. First, the texture of the stuffed animal was hard to re-create because it is fabric and not plastic, so seeing the shadows and highlights is harder. I also struggled with the pear because I painted it too big to begin with, so I had to try and make it smaller after it had dried, which created a weird color underneath. It was also difficult for me to make the pear and stuffed animal look as though they were as close as they were in reality.

Acrylic Landscape

For this project I chose a landscape that had colors that I liked and wanted to work with. The main colors were various pinks and blues. The biggest problems I had were getting the correct colors, shading the clouds and creating the ripples in the water. The ripples were my biggest problem, as I have never done them before and I had trouble understanding how to shade them in a way that made it looks like ripples.

Acrylic Social Issue

For this project I chose to do a girl in a mask to represent the repression of emotions and mental illness. I kept the background a gray color, and I let the canvas peak through a little bit to give it an industrial (?) feel. I painted the girl with a white mask on, and black eyes so that it is anonymous person. I struggled a lot with blending the skin on the neck, the hair, the facial features on the mask and the mask. I find that acrylics do not blend very well, and as I am still somewhat new to it, my usual portraits are not turning out the way I want them to. I probably will not be doing another acrylic portrait anytime soon.

For this project I did a pill bottle and a small metal cup. I chose to do a black background and a green 'table'. I struggled mostly with the oils not being fully dry and moving around when I tried to add detail. I also struggled with adding highlights because they would just blend away if I wasn't careful.

Oil Portrait (self-made canvas)

For this project we had to choose a picture of our choice and then make our own canvas to match. I chose to do a smaller, square canvas, since my image was a square. I chose a portrait of an albino woman with her eyes closed. Out of all the paints we did, I liked oils the best. I found it to be a little more forgiving, since it dried so slowly. But by the same token, the fact that it dries slowly is a little bit of an issue as well. I struggled with the paints smearing around, and since I was short on time, I didn't have a choice but to rush a little bit. Since I missed a lot of our time in class with oils due to being ill, I did not have enough time to put as much detail as I wanted to. However, I feel that this is the one of the best pieces I have done in this class (besides the other oil painting).
