Feminist Theory

This school of theory is concerned with the ways in which literature and other cultural productions reinforce or undermine the economic, political, social and psychological oppression of women. This extension also looks at how aspects of our culture are inherently patriarchal (male-dominated) and this critique strives to expose the explicit and implicit misogyny in gender inequality.

In season one of the show Mad Men, the female characters are not necessarily feminists but the core of the series is primarily concerned with the struggles of women in the 1960s.

Salary Difference between Males and Females

The wage gap between males and females in the workforce has been a problem for many decades. Men have always had higher salaries than women. In the show Mad Men, we see the difference in salaries between males and females in the episode “New Amsterdam”. When Trudy, Peter’s new wife shows him an expensive apartment, Peter tells the viewers that his salary is $75 dollars a week. This is very different for Peggy who in the episode “Ladies room” excitedly tells Joan that her weekly salary is a mere $35. Peggy’s excitement towards her paycheque demonstrates that even though she is getting paid less than half of Peter’s salary, it is still a lot of money for a woman to make during this time period. Even though Peter holds a higher position at Sterling Cooper and makes more money than Peggy we must understand that women in the sixties were not accepted to have high position jobs and therefore made closing the wage gap very difficult. At Sterling Cooper, there are no women who hold high position jobs and help run the business, only secretaries and the lower paying jobs. Also occurring in the sixties, the signing of the Equal Pay Act in order to close the wage gap difference between men and women but even today women and men are still paid differently, although today women are now accepted to have high position jobs. In order to keep closing the wage gap, women as a whole must continue to fight for equal pay in all professions between genders.

Objectification of Women

During the 1960s, women were advertised as sex objects to appeal to the interest of men. Many advertisements and magazines such as Playboy magazine began to glorify the objectification of women which lead to many women being seen as objects of male pleasure. During season one of Mad Men, we see multiple men use women only for sex. Two very similar examples are Don with his mistress Midge who we see in the episode “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”, and Roger with Joan in the episode “Babylon”. Both Don and Roger have beautiful and loyal wives at home but still decide to constantly cheat their spouses with a mistress. They use their mistresses a temporary escape from their miserable family life and unhappy marriages. We see the symbolism of their lifestyles in the opening of the show. We first see a man walking into his office staring at his professional accomplishments and when things fall apart, he begins falling past many women and lastly by a family. Eventually, the man lands safely on a couch resumes smoking unharmed by the events that just occurred. This intro represents the lifestyle most men especially Don lived during this era. They live double lives filled with lies and secrets and bounce from woman to woman looking for quick affairs as a distraction from their dejected family lives. Eventually, they would end up at home with their families free of consequence or remorse for the acts of betrayal they have committed. They struggle to be monogamous and do not take into account the feelings of any of the women they have had relations with.

The Controlling of Women's Lives

Throughout season one of Mad Men, we see how men control women’s lives. One of the first examples we see is in the episode “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” when Peggy visits Dr.Emerson on Joan’s recommendation to be prescribed a birth control pill. After remarking that she is unmarried, he begins to tell her that he “will take her off this medicine if she abuses it”. This small scene is very symbolic of how men are in complete control of women’s lives, even their sex lives. During this time it is expected that women in the workforce have sex since it is the reason Joan originally went to visit Dr.Emerson and sent Peggy, but at the same time men look down on women who are not virgins since “easy women don’t find husbands”. Advertising is about controlling the buyer's desires and the male characters in this series who are all in advertising have the desire to control others around them. This impulse translates to their need to control the lives of the women around them. In the episode "Ladies Room” when Betty and Roger’s wife Mona excuse themselves to visit the washroom, two lavatory attendants whisper between each other that "if their purses get any smaller, [they're] gonna starve”. The wives can carry small purses since the men are in complete financial control. Most women did not have jobs in the sixties and relied completely on the man to bring in an income. This allowed the men to maintain control over their wives and keep them from gaining independence.
