Unfortunately, their plans are usually interrupted by Lenny's mental disability. He has the mentality of a small child, and he hardly knows when he's done something wrong or what to do about it. They find themselves on yet another ranch trying to make a living. So far, things on this ranch have gone pretty well. George and Lenny make friends pretty fast, and Lenny even gets a puppy. However, things go awry when Curly and his wife come into play. Curly likes to cause problems for Lenny and physically hurt him, while his wife tends to get him in trouble by talking to him about things he shouldn't be subjected to.

Eventually, George tells Slim about what happened at the last ranch, but Slim is an understanding guy. Candy even gets involved in their plan to buy a home after his dog's passing. Meanwhile, Lennie gets in a fight with Curly and breaks his hand. His wife knows what really happened, but their excuse is that he injured it in an accident. 

One day Lenny is in the barn and he accidentally kills his puppy after it bit him. He feels bad about it. To make things even worse, Curly's wife shows up and starts talking to him even after he refuses her company. She even lets him touch her hair. When he doesn't let go, she begins to scream. Lenny is frightened, and he doesn't want to get in trouble. He breaks her neck on accident. After realizing what he had done, he went back to the bush by the river like George had told him to. The guys eventually find out, and Curly sets out on a hunt for Lenny. George takes it upon himself to finish Lenny in a way where he wouldn't know what happened or feel any pain by shooting him at the base of his spine by his neck. They (try) to solve this problem by working on ranches to earn money each month.

Another conflict is Lenny's accident. After killing Curley's wife, Lenny runs away and the men go on a hunt for him. George- So George is clearly just out for two things- to get a place to settle down and to keep Lenny in track to do so. He's smart, and he visibly cares for Lenny. It appears to be a tough love situation though, as he does give Lenny a hard time for his mistakes.

Lenny- Lenny has some form of mental disorder, meaning he doesn't behave like most men his age. He cares a lot for small soft animals and matirials, but he is also very afraid; like a small child in a grown-man's world. He can't fathom on dealing with issues, but instead just freezes up and uses his brute strength to take care of the problem. Violently, yes, but accidental.

Curly's Wife- Curly's wife (who we never know the name of which shows how she feels rejected in the story) Is really just a lonely woman on a ranch where the only people she has access to talk to are just a bunch of workers. They know she could be trouble, but yet she keeps up the persistence. It's in interesting concept: Two grown men faced with the hardest life can offer with added pressure from a mental condition. I feel people would be too afraid to make a story like this in the modern day because people would be afraid of making something not politically correct. It has interesting characters and an intriguing plot.
