Before reading, I think that formative assessments serve as the landmarks that I want to reach on the way to the summative assessment. In instruction, these could look like a series of tasks that need to be accomplished to get us to that final goal. For example, If I want students to be able to describe themselves and others, I will have a formative assessment that involves them describing themselves, then one describing others, finally a summative in which they do both. Each formative assessment, then, becomes a lesson within a larger unit.

After reading, I think a broader understanding of formative assessment is helpful. The formative assessments discussed in the article would be used to develop instruction, guide what to teach or reteach, and determine when students have mastered the concept.

I belive that formative assessments are essential to undertand individual student i.e. how they lern and what they learn. We are only able to make instructional decisions with the information we get through formative assessment. The article mentions about how formative assessment are done propaply and potential challenges that both teacher and students might be facing in actions. As a teacher, all my instructional decisions for tomorrow depend on formative assments in my classes.

Formative assessments are an important part of using big ideas to plan instruction because when implemented properly the teacher is able to see student progress. It is essential that teachers focus on what questions they are asking their students and are aware of how they are questioning. It is important that teachers provide wait time and create a climate in which all students feel comfortable attempting an answer.

What makes formative assessments so effective is that it helps us know exactly what students need, where we have to follow-up or deepen in their understanding. In this way we teachers can use, plan or change the planing to be more effective, and to implement any other kind of technique. It makes students understand why we as teachers are asking more questions or giving them more time to think by themselves.

Anne In order to build on prior knowledge, we need to identify the skills which the students have attained. Then we can build our lessons on the next level. Formative assessments validate student abilities to be prepared for advancing to future targets.
