Fredrick Douglas being an escaped slave himself knew firsthand how terrible slavery was and thus he was able to inform many about the negatives of slavery.

1688 - The Mennonites

The Mennonites were a group of Christians who interpreted Christianity differently than others at the time and because of that disliked slavery and thought that everyone was equal. To try and get more people to think this way they circulated an anti-slavery petition to try and abolish slavery in early America. This petition was the first petition to go against slavery made in America which helped to show the issue of slavery to many in early America.

1850 - John Brown

John Brown was an abolitionist who died trying to fight back against slavery. This happened when John Brown tried to raid Harpers Ferry, West Virginia which was a U.S armory. His reason for raiding the Armory was to arm slaves with weapons and start a revolution. His revolution ultimately ended up with a local militia stopping him and executing him. Overall, John Brown helped to bring attention to slavery everywhere.
