Agency has got to be the most powerful tool or skill that we could inspire in our young global citizens of the world. How exhilarating it is to be a part of this change in framing of the PYP.

I appreciate that new workshops will also be harnessing the power of motivated, reflective teachers by inviting them to set their own success criteria for the workshops.

I’m thrilled that I am able to read through “approved” workshops put forth by the IB - this will help me to take more risks with the workshops I sign up for.

What worries me?

My lack of confidence in my ability to offer new or valuable insight to educators and leaders who are more experienced than me gets in the way of my volunteering for Category 2 and 3 workshops. I worry that the fact that I’m “only” a classroom teacher will interfere with my connecting with and fully empathizing with potential workshop participants at these levels. What I need to do now is to start to read through existing workshops to get the feel for how they will flow as well as to familiarize myself with content. After that, and perhaps some networking via Facebok or IBEN Engage, I’ll just need to dive in!

I will take some additional time in January to review this course in even greater detail. Though I feel I have a good grasp on the enhancements, I will need to spend some time familiarizing myself with the new workshops. I want to read each of the TSMs as well.

I will engage more with PYP: from principles into practice and be sure to be on the lookout for the updated Standards and Practices as well as any other publications put out by the IB

In the spirit of collaboration (and the life of a busy mom of two very young children), I will stay active on the PYP Facebook groups to which I currently belong to help make sure there’s nothing I miss

Evolution of my thinking...Reflective prompt 1

How will my response to the enhanced PYP framework and the revised programme standards and practices shape the perspective of PYP educators and schools I support as an IB educator?

As a member of IBEN, my personal perspective will be scrutinized carefully by other PYP educators and schools that I support as an IB educator. I don’t know the extent to which my personal perspective will shape anyone else’s of course, but I am aware that professionalism and positivity are crucial here as IB makes this shift. Thankfully, I find the enhancements overwhelmingly positive and will have no trouble celebrating the enhancements with colleagues and new people I meet.

What are the implications for moving to a different model of workshop design and facilitation?

With the move to the new workshop design, it is clear that the IB is making a shift from transferring knowledge/familiarity with various aspects of the PYP to developing empowered teachers who will seek to improve upon their own capabilities which will then help them to do the same with students in their own classrooms. Empowerment will breed more empowerment. As workshops allow participants to identify their own success criterion and ask them to self-assess and reflect routinely throughout the workshop, this will help to inspire these same participants to try to employ similar best practices within their own classes, putting increased ownership for learning on students.

How can I further cultivate agency (voice, choice and ownership) among members of the PYP global community of practice?

My thinking is still evolving for this one, if you will. But for now, I think that doing my best to “live the learner profile” is an excellent place to start. I will continue to be open-minded and to listen carefully and respectfully to the needs and new ideas of those with whom I work. Asking questions like “How might we…” or “What different approaches could we use to…” might help us to think divergently and more freely when considering how to best support and empower our learners (whether they’re workshop participants or students). Allowing workshop participants and our students to choose avenues of sharing and presenting, making use of a variety of thinking routines, embedding reflection throughout the learning process, and allowing learners to set their own goals and assess their own progress - this sort of work will hopefully continue to cultivate agency among us all.
