Use material that is relevant to your student’s lives.

It is so important to be able to form connections from the material to your life. It makes the material more interesting for students and they become more engaged. If a student can't find any connections to their lives in the material, they may find the learning to be of little worth and become unresponsive or uninvolved.

Allocating time for students after lectures.

I think that this strategy is significant for student learning and teacher learning. Using even a minimal time after class to speak with students about course materials or for just a quick chat allows students to feel connected and heard in the classroom. This is beneficial as some students learn better one-on-one and prefer to have their questions answered right away, rather than waiting for an e-mail to come through, which may take many hours or even days. Building good relationships with students will create a more positive learning climate and enhance the interactions between students and professors.

- Vanessa

The strategy that I have taken is to 'give direct feedback to students regularly'. This is something that I currently do and I find that giving the student more time to practice the feedback, even if it is an assignment, allows the students to hit their goals in the end.
Jocelyn

Instructors can provide role models to help improve academic performance

This is something I take very seriously as an instructor and as a leader. It is ridiculous to think that I may be able to get away with something just because I am the instructor. If I expect my students to be on time for class, for example, then it is imperative that I am on time as well. Students learn a lot from your behavior, and if they see you as someone they look up to, then they will model their behavior on what they see you doing. This is something to keep in mind when interacting with our students. They see you as an example of what they are trying to become with the learning you are providing, so it is very important to me to make sure I am living up to their expectations.

This would indicate to the students that I am interested in teaching the material which encourages them to also be interested in the material and by being more open it lets the students know that they can reach out to me if they have any questions regarding the subject. - Sahib

The instructor's feelings about the course material go a long way toward the tone the instructor uses when presenting the topic. Generally, if you have an excited feeling about the content and can use an inquisitive tone, students will make note of this and try to connect with why you are excited. Even if they don't, they will pick up on your tone and feel the general excitement in the room. So when I am teaching a subject, I often try to find new facts about the topic that fascinate me and build my own excitement about the topic. - Don
