The Algerian War of Independence started with a series of attacks on the French by the National Liberation Front (FLN) through Algeria. The FLN was led by Ahmed Ben Bella, who later became the prime minister and first elected president of the Algerian republic after the war had ended. Algeria wanted independence because France's promises of greater self-rule went unfulfilled.

The French military launched a large counter-attack against the FLN. The war intensified significantly, and the French forcefully resettled citizens to prevent local support for the FLN.

The French army did a coup in Algiers, leading to a failed counter-coup by French army officers in Paris. After the mess, it led to the creation of the Fifth French Republic, with General Charles de Gaulle as the president.

Charles de Gaulle and the FLN leaders held secret talks in France to negotiate a solution to the war. The papers were signed on March 18, 1962 at Évian-les-Bains, officially granting Algeria independence.

Algeria achieved independence on July 5, 1962. The French military fully withdrew from the country, and the 8 year war for independence ended. Independence is important because it allows you freedom. You can have your own beliefs, your own interests, your own likes, your own objects, etc.
