Prompted by the wave of imperialist fervor that swept over the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Spanish-American War marked the entry of the United States on the world scene as a colonial power. U.S. victory in the war against the crumbling Spanish Empire in Central America and the Pacific allowed America to expand its borders farther than ever before and definitively establish itself as the dominant power in the Western Hemisphere. The picture below is of the destroyed USS Maine - an event closely tied to US entry into war with Spain.
Sources:
Sowards, Adam M. (2016). Spanish-American War.

The successful launch of a Soviet satellite, Sputnik, marks the unofficial beginning of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The significance of the space race can be found in the desire by both nations to prove their technological, and arguably societal, superiority, and this trend continues to escalate throughout the 20th century. This event marks a turning point in U.S. history as social and political bodies began to invest significantly more time, resources, and imagination to non-economic technological and scientific advancement.
Sources:
Sputnik.
