I narrowed down from my first thoughts 3 ideas in which to explore. My first one was as visitors walked around the museum, they would be able to pick up objects for example and at the end of their visit they would be able to create something with what they have collected. I was inspired by the stamp stations that are in museums and Warner Bros. Studios London. As you walk around, at specific sections of the exhibition, you are able to stamp the leaflet or passport you are given (in the case of the Harry Potter Studios). Incorporating the part of encouraging people to draw, I came up with the idea of having sections throughout the exhibition, but they would be able to collect different shapes with cut outs. At the end of their journey they would be able to sit down at a table and use the facilities supplied to create marks on a piece of paper (similar to what is shown below). They could use as much or as little paint, for instance, as they wanted.

I also felt that the interactive leaflet would be a very good idea to explore further. Taking into consideration that leaflets are everywhere, especially in museums, whether they are telling you about the museum and/or the exhibition itself, they can seem very plain and simple. So I felt that making the leaflet interactive and/or allowing the visitor to draw within the leaflet. Referring back to the handout we were given explaining the brief, it said to create something that the visitors could use whilst walking around or to encourage them to draw when at home or at work. My initial idea was to create a leaflet that would include information about the exhibition and contact information but also sections in which the visitors could create their own marks as they were walking around; inspired by the artwork #findinglines. I initially thought of the wreck it journal and the whole concept behind the book. Also, there could be parts of the leaflet that they could tear off. This would allow them to leave their drawings at the museum, which could be put on display and inspire others. This would then allow them to take the contact information home so they would be able to follow the exhibitions journey and see their work soon display through social media such as the museums Twitter account. https://twitter.com/derbymuseums?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

I came up with the idea of an activity station where people could sit together and create art inspired by the #findinglines exhibition. When we went to the Silk Mill, there was a room with a table in with a variety of materials for us to use. This inspired me to have a designated area of the exhibition which would hold various materials for visitors to use. Whilst we were at the Silk Mill, we were asked to come up with an activity which would encourage people to draw. We felt that if people are pressured into drawing something, they don't want so we came up with the idea of getting the visitors to create art without even thinking about it. This idea stuck with me, so for this idea I thought that with all the materials given on the table, they would be able to create marks but they are blindfolded or can't use their hands. This way they wouldn't think so much about what they are creating and the art would come very naturally.

I wanted to try and experiment with folding my own paper different ways and see what worked better, whether they were too difficult or not and whether it would be the correct format for what we wanted to include and achieve. Leaflets such as 'V&A and me' designed in 2010 by the designer Johnson Banks for the Victoria & Albert Museum, I thought, was a good leaflet to look at for inspiration as the way that the designer folds this promotional piece was a very clever way to divert from a typical and boring format. For this leaflet, their initial idea was for the leaflets to represent trails across the museum. The designers drew up a list of people who both them and the museum thought "would select interesting and unusual journeys through one of the world's greatest museums". Their task was then for them to design a map representing each individual they had come up with. They had experimented several times in the folding process. They chose to do the map A2 which once folded "created the illusion of many pieces of paper, but just emanated from one". http://johnsonbanks.co.uk/exhibitions-and-3d/va-and-me/

On the 21st October, we went to Brindley Place, Birmingham as a University visit to the Ikon Gallery. We explored the current exhibitions; Sara Barker, Žilvinas Kempinas and Philippine Hamen. I found that this museum was very different to many such as the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. I feel as though the Ikon Gallery turned out to be a lot more influential.

Incorporating rods of steel and aluminium, Barker's artworks are sometimes wall based, sometimes floor based - and sometimes moving from floor to wall and back again - reflecting her interest in how space may exist in the mind, in stories and in memories'.

It is inspired by David Lodge's short story, The Man Who Wouldn't Get Up (first published in 1966), about a man who is tired of getting up every morning to live the same joyless life, day after day, until one morning he decides to stay where he is. On the boards above the table, there were the words 'My favourite Ikon moment...'. This type of activity space was something that I was very inspired by as it engages visitors to both create artwork for the wall and look at what other people have drawn and what their favourite moment was.

A quick mock up of our leaflet in the shape of a cube inspired by the feedback received in Friday's lesson. The top left design would be the outer image which would be what everyone would see first; this would include things such as the front cover and contact information. The bottom right design is the inside of the leaflet. This would include all the practical elements such as the perforated holes and the sections inspired by the cards shown to me at the Silk Mill. Seeing as there was no need to have a net inside of the leaflet because the actual shape was a cube, this would mean that there is more space inside and would have to do back to our initial ideas of what to include inside.

As part of our leaflet we made a team decision and agreed that incorporating perforated holes into one of the activities would be a creative way of getting the audience to create a piece of art. The concept behind the idea was so that the audience would pierce holes and it would reveal a textured/printed image behind. Also this makes the idea original as not every person would have the same outcome as it all depends on which holes have been pierced and will create a different image all the time. I decided to experiment using oil paint, however focusing on texture and technique. For example I created two images using a range of tools to try and create a different texture. My main focus was to avoid using something as simple and straight forward as a paint brush. One method to test different techniques was to use a range of different tools such as a stick to scratch lines through the paint, the end of a spatular in dotted motion so that the texture would become rough. I also used a protractor in circular motions to test the outcome. Another method I tested was a marble technique. I enjoyed trying this technique as there would always be a different image. The marble technique consisted of white spirit (turps) and oil paint. After filling up a container with white spirit I then added a range of different oil paints and allowed the paper soak both the white spirit and oil paint. Each time I did this the end result would be unique. This was a interesting way of testing different methods of creating pattern and texture.

After our feedback session, we chose to change the shape of the leaflet to a cube but felt that this still wasn't working so changed to a square based pyramid. (Final Designs shown below) We then booked a laser cutting, foiling and vacuum session for us (which we all attended) to make our leaflets after printing them at the Print Bureau.

We printed our leaflet on two separate pieces of paper which we later found out to be a mistake as we then realised we had to perforate the two separate pieces and then vacuum them together. If they did not align, you would notice.

We perforated the inside of the leaflet first then vacuumed both pieces together and then finally perforated the outer section. We were planning on foiling specific strips and triangles for the front cover but they were too thin and fiddly to cut out and stick on so chose to scrap the idea.

What we would change:
- Get the leaflet printed double sided
- Use a thinner paper (When i folded my leaflet it was quite tricky to fold and created creases in the paper
- Find an alternative method to the foiling
