The acquisition of hikmah

Introduction

The concept of ḥikmah (wisdom) is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and is considered a virtue that guides believers to act justly and righteously. In Islam, ḥikmah is not only about knowledge but also about applying that knowledge with sincerity and understanding. It is a gift that Allah grants to those who are sincere in their worship and intentions.

Acquisition of Ḥikmah

Allah says in the Quran:

"He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good..."
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:269)

This verse emphasizes that ḥikmah is a divine gift, and acquiring it brings immense benefit. One can gain ḥikmah through:

ʿIbādah (worship): Sincere acts of devotion build spiritual awareness and humility.

Correct niyyah (intention): Ensuring actions are done purely for the sake of Allah.

Amal (righteous actions): Good deeds done with sincerity lead to deeper understanding.

Ehsan (spiritual excellence): Worshipping Allah as though you see Him increases mindfulness and wisdom.

Personal Reflection

I feel that acts of worship, like praying Tahajjud or reciting the Quran with reflection, bring clarity and wisdom to my decisions. There was a time I was confused about choosing the right path in my studies, but making du'a with a sincere heart and relying on Allah's guidance helped me choose with confidence. I believe that wisdom grows through life experiences when they are connected to Allah's teachings.

Usrah Participation

During our Usrah, we discussed how hikmah is more than just knowledge; it is about implementing what we know with humility and sincerity. One member mentioned how he learned to remain calm and wise in conflict after studying the Prophet’s character. I shared my thoughts on how niyyah (intention) transforms a simple act into something meaningful and blessed by Allah.

Collaboration

I contributed to our group discussion by presenting the hadith:
"Hikmah is the lost property of the believer; wherever he finds it, he is more worthy of it." (Tirmidhi)
We reflected on how hikmah can be found in different experiences, even challenges. I also helped design a visual slide summarizing how Amal and Ehsan contribute to the acquisition of Hikmah.

Improvements & Future Goals

I aim to improve my intention (niyyah) before every action, especially in my studies and worship. I also plan to reflect more regularly through journaling or quiet time after prayers, to connect my daily experiences with lessons from the Quran and Sunnah. My goal is to grow in understanding and live with greater wisdom inshaAllah.

Understanding the Wisdom (Ḥikmah) Behind ʿIbādah (Worship)

Introduction

In Islam, ʿibādah (worship) is not just a ritual act but a way to draw nearer to Allah and develop spiritual strength. Every act of worship carries deep wisdom (ḥikmah) that nurtures the soul and shapes the believer’s character. From daily salah to the once-in-a-lifetime Hajj, each form of ʿibādah helps build discipline, patience, humility, and taqwa (God-consciousness).

Wisdom Behind ʿIbādah

Allah mentions in the Quran:

"Indeed, prayer keeps one from immorality and wrongdoing."
(Surah Al-Ankabut, 29:45)

"Fasting is prescribed… so you may become righteous."
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183)

"Take from their wealth a charity to purify them..."
(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103)

Each act of worship has its own unique ḥikmah:

Salah (Prayer): Builds discipline, keeps us mindful of Allah, and prevents immoral behaviour.

Sawm (Fasting): Teaches patience, empathy for the poor, and strengthens taqwa.

Zakah (Charity): Purifies wealth, reduces greed, and strengthens social unity.

Hajj (Pilgrimage): Teaches sacrifice, unity, and offers a spiritual reset.

Personal Reflection

I find that praying regularly helps me stay grounded and focused, especially when I feel overwhelmed. Fasting during Ramadan has taught me patience and made me appreciate the blessings I often overlook. I remember once, during a stressful week, praying with full khushu' (concentration) gave me calmness and helped me reset my intentions. These acts are more than rituals; they are lifelines.

Usrah Participation

In our Usrah discussion, we explored how each ʿibādah shapes our values and daily behaviour. One member shared how giving zakah helped them feel more connected to the community. I contributed by explaining how salah, when performed mindfully, acts as a reminder that Allah is always watching, which helps us avoid sin.

Collaboration

I worked with my group to prepare a short presentation showing the ḥikmah behind each pillar of ʿibādah. We included relevant Quranic verses and real-life examples. My part focused on explaining how sawm helps in developing patience and empathy, especially in a world full of distractions.

Improvements & Future Goals

One area I want to improve is performing salah with more focus and understanding, especially by learning the meanings of what I recite. I also aim to increase my sadaqah (voluntary charity) regularly, not just during Ramadan. InshaAllah, I hope to strengthen my taqwa through these consistent acts of ʿibādah.

Preparation of Salah with Khushu

Introduction

Salah (prayer) is not only a physical act of worship but a spiritual connection with Allah. Among the most important elements of salah is khushu’—the presence of heart and mind. Khushu’ transforms salah from a ritual into a meaningful experience that nourishes the soul.

Understanding Khushu’ in Salah

Khushu’ means to be humble, focused, and fully present in our prayer. It involves feeling a deep sense of awe and submission to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The first thing to be lifted from this ummah will be khushu’.” This shows how vital it is to safeguard it.

Some things that prevent khushu’ include:

Waswas (whispers or doubts from Shaytan)

Thinking about worldly matters during salah

Praying while hungry or needing the toilet

Being surrounded by distractions

Ways to improve khushu’:

Perform wudhu’ properly and recite its dua

Understand the meanings of what is recited

Pray at the beginning of the prayer time

Choose a clean and quiet place to pray

Avoid excessive movements and focus your eyes on the place of sujud

Personal Reflection

Khushu’ is something I struggle with, especially when I'm tired or distracted by my phone or assignments. But I notice a big difference when I prepare well, making proper wudhu’, clearing my mind, and reminding myself that I’m standing before Allah. One time, after making a heartfelt dua in sujud during tahajjud, I felt so calm and connected. That salah had real khushu’, and I want to feel that more often.

Usrah Participation

During our Usrah session, we reflected on what breaks our focus in salah. Many shared how phones, noise, or even rushing the prayer affected their khushu’. We discussed practical ways to build a stronger spiritual atmosphere, such as praying in a quiet corner or taking a few moments before salah to make a personal dua to set the intention.

Collaboration

As part of our group task, I helped design a poster listing “10 Ways to Improve Khushu’ in Salah,” which we shared in our class group chat. I also participated in a discussion where we each shared one tip we use to improve focus—mine was reciting short surahs slowly while reflecting on their meaning.

Improvements & Future Goals

My goal is to increase my khushu’ by memorizing the meanings of commonly recited phrases in salah and slowing down my pace during prayer. I also want to recite a dua before salah, asking Allah to help me focus, and to pray at the beginning of the time consistently.

The virtue found in Salah with khusyu

Introduction

Salah with khusyu’ (focus and humility) is more than a ritual—it is the foundation of a spiritually fulfilling life. It transforms prayer into a powerful connection with Allah, where a believer submits entirely in body, heart, and mind. When khusyu’ is present, salah becomes a source of inner strength and virtue.

Virtues of Salah with Khusyu’

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“If any Muslim performs ablution well and offers his prayer with humility and bowing, it will be an expiation for his past sins…” (Sahih Muslim)

This hadith shows that salah with khusyu’ brings forgiveness and spiritual elevation. The key virtues that arise from this kind of prayer are:

Al-Ṭāʿah (Obedience): Full submission to Allah through physical and emotional devotion.

Al-Jihād (Struggle): Fighting distractions and maintaining focus in prayer, symbolizing spiritual strength.

Muḥāsabah (Self-Reflection): Evaluating our intentions and deeds before Allah.

Tawaḍḍuʿ (Humility): Bowing and sujood as physical expressions of humbleness.

ʿIffah (Modesty): Consciousness of Allah that restrains one from sins.

Each of these traits nurtures a better character and a stronger connection with our Creator.

Personal Reflection

Salah with khusyu’ has helped me in my journey of self-discipline. There have been days when I felt overwhelmed or emotionally down, but praying slowly with focus and understanding brought a sense of calm. I especially feel this during sujood, when I open my heart in dua. One moment I remember well was when I recited Surah Al-Fatihah slowly in fajr prayer and felt as if I was really speaking to Allah. It gave me peace and clarity for the rest of the day.

Usrah Participation

In our Usrah session, we reflected on how salah with khusyu’ develops noble values. Some friends shared how focusing more during salah helped them control anger or make better decisions. We also discussed how to fight distractions and create an environment that encourages khusyu’, like praying in a quiet room or understanding the meaning of each recitation.

Collaboration

As a group, we created a presentation to explain the five virtues of salah with khusyu’. I contributed by designing slides about Muḥāsabah and providing Quranic references. We also ended the session with a collective dua asking Allah to help us gain focus in our salah and live by its virtues outside of prayer.

Improvements & Future Goals

I want to build a stronger habit of praying each salah on time and with full focus. My goal is to memorize more Quranic verses and understand their meaning so I can reflect better during prayer. I also want to make a habit of pausing for a moment before each salah to mentally prepare myself and set the right intention.

The virtues found in Ṣawm (Fasting)

Introduction

Fasting in the month of Ramadan is not just a physical act of abstaining from food and drink but a deeply spiritual exercise of self-discipline, reflection, and connection with Allah. The Qur’an and Hadith both emphasize that the ultimate purpose of fasting is to attain taqwa—a heightened sense of God-consciousness.

Wisdom of Fasting in Ramadan

Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 183:

“O you who have believed, fasting is prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you so that you may attain taqwa.”

This verse reveals that fasting is not unique to Muslims, but rather a universal form of worship that leads to righteousness.

Among the core hikmah (wisdoms) behind fasting are:

Sabr (Patience): Fasting teaches endurance, control over desires, and steadfastness in obedience.

Takrim (Honor & Nobility): It elevates one’s status through obedience, spiritual closeness to Allah, and social empathy.

Rahmah (Compassion & Mercy): Fasting softens the heart, builds kindness toward others, and nurtures a forgiving spirit.

The fasting person also receives unique rewards, as in the Hadith Qudsi:

“Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it Myself.”

Personal Reflection

Ramadan always feels like a reset for me. It’s the month when I feel closest to Allah. I remember one Ramadan when I sincerely made a long dua at tahajjud, asking for ease in my studies. That month, not only did I improve spiritually, but I also found clarity in my goals and peace in my heart. I’ve also learned to be more patient and careful with my words, especially while fasting—avoiding gossip and harsh speech as the Prophet ﷺ advised.

Usrah Participation

In our Usrah session, we shared reflections on what fasting has taught us beyond hunger. One sister mentioned how fasting made her more empathetic, and another highlighted how much closer she felt to the Quran. I contributed by sharing the concept of sabr in three forms: patience in obedience, in avoiding sins, and in enduring hardship—an idea I learned through a Hadith we discussed in class.

Collaboration

Our group created an infographic showing the three key virtues of fasting: Sabr, Takrim, and Rahmah. I helped summarize the “Takrim” section and added a Hadith about the noble status of the fasting person. We also recorded short reflections to share in our group presentation, encouraging others to embrace these values beyond Ramadan.

Improvements & Future Goals

I aim to carry the discipline and compassion I’ve developed during Ramadan into the rest of the year. One goal is to continue fasting on Mondays and Thursdays and to increase my daily Quran recitation. I also want to be more conscious of my speech and actions, remembering that fasting is not only about the stomach, but also about the heart and tongue.

The Virtues Found in Zakāh

Introduction

Zakāh, one of the five pillars of Islam, is more than just a financial obligation—it is an act of spiritual purification and social solidarity. It reflects our reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and builds strong bonds of brotherhood (Ukhūwwah) within the Muslim community.

Understanding Zakāh and Its Virtues

Allah says in the Quran:

"Take, [O Muḥammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase." (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103)

This verse highlights two main virtues of Zakāh:

Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah): By giving from our wealth, we are reminded that our true Provider is Allah. It trains us to let go of material attachment and trust that Allah will replenish what we give.

Ukhuwwah (Brotherhood): Zakāh fosters unity, empathy, and care among Muslims. It purifies our hearts from greed and cultivates a sense of responsibility towards others in need.

Personal Reflection

I believe Zakāh plays a powerful role in purifying the heart and detaching it from materialism. One personal moment that stands out was when I donated to a family in need without expecting anything in return. It filled me with a sense of peace and gratitude, and I truly felt closer to Allah. It reminded me that helping others can uplift not only them, but also myself spiritually.

Usrah Participation

During our Usrah session, we discussed how Zakāh strengthens the Ummah. One member shared how giving regularly made her more mindful of the blessings she receives. I contributed by reflecting on the verse from Surah At-Tawbah and shared how it inspires me to give not just out of obligation, but out of love for Allah and care for others.

Collaboration

As part of our group activity, I worked with my Usrah members to design a short infographic explaining the spiritual and social benefits of Zakāh. We included quotes from hadith and the Quran to highlight how Zakāh fosters both Tawakkul and Ukhuwwah. It was meaningful to see how everyone contributed their own understanding and creativity.

Improvements & Future Goals

I aim to learn more about the specific rulings of Zakāh and how to calculate it properly. I also want to make voluntary charity (Sadaqah) a more consistent habit in my life. By doing so, I hope to grow spiritually and strengthen my connection with both Allah and the community.
