Most of them work for a knight or other members of society due to their low social status. They earn land and protection by serving their master, this is called the feudal system. 

Many of them work in slavery for the overall kingdom, but the others consist of cooks, blacksmiths, farmers, ect. Peasants do not take part in any wars.
