It was more of "you need to know arithmetic a how to write a ho-to essay'." NOW, as a professional, I see it in EVERYTHING the students do: daily assessments, tracking, goal setting, reflecting on student performance. My education was highly alternative, and for the most part curriculum standards were not highly emphasized to me. 
Professionally: I also worked in a very alternative setting (a few of them) and so was given the freedom to design my curric as I saw fit, totally seperate from any kind of "standard." I only remember a few teachers even mentioning the standards we were learning, but I never really made a connection to them. As a teacher, I felt/feel like the standards were always closing in, leading to less creativity in teaching practices, less teacher autonomy, and always becoming a bigger burden. I do remember how important state testing scores were in measuring learning abilities.
Currently, I do wonder how difficult it will be to advocate for culturally sustaining and multicultural education in the classroom since I have not been a teacher yet. But, I will try my best to sneak it in if I have to!

I remember vividly the few teachers that didn't do that. As an educator, I see where those teachers are coming from. There is so much emphasis on teaching all standards in a short amount of time. However, I try to be the teacher that sees past that to more important things. Now as a teacher, I definitely still see this. Especially being in a title 1 school and having district “visitors” very often. The students were always being held to a standard that was not appropriate for them. It was crazy to see how much curriculum was expected of us within just a years’ time.
