((Savannah LT))
Edwards often used repetition, repeating the amount of danger his audience was in and God's feelings towards his audience to almost strike fear and disappointment or dismay. He did it quite often, with examples of " . . . full of the fire of wrath, that you are held over in the hand of that God, whose wrath is provoked and incensed as much against you, . . ." (Edwards, 89) and ". . . there is nothing between you and Hell but the air; it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up." (Edwards, 87).

Madison Allan: I noticed in J. Edwards' sermon was a lot of ethos and pathos, played on the part of the heart strings towards the readers own family and faith at the same time, "see how your poor soul is crushed... he will have no compassion towards you..." (Edwards, 88). Meaning, God wont take mercy on the reader. Whether they do good deeds or don't, they are still considered wrongful if they don't agree with the writer, that's pathos and ethos.

J. Edwards' uses quite a bit of rhetorical devices. An example of one would be a hyperbole (we at least hope it is), on page 89 it states, "...you are ten thousand times more abominable in his eyes, than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours...". It shows the hatred God may have, and also makes the readers fear.
