I feel a bit like I'm struggling to discern the difference between personalized learning and differentiation as a part of best teaching practices. There seems to be the assumption that we are transitioning out of teacher centered large group instruction toward something that is new and innovative. I haven't seen many teachers in my 13 years not trying to individualize and differentiate in order to meet student needs. I have noticed occasions of teachers being less comfortable with thinking and teaching globally with respect to various cultural backgrounds, but some of that comes with the difficult task of knowing and navigating cultural nuances that one may not have familiarity with.

Both are looking to meet each individual according to their needs, however they are meeting these needs in different ways. Equity appears to focus more on needs based within race, culture, ethnicity, economic status, or other more global needs. PL appears to focus more on needs based on student interest, voice and choice, needs based content instruction, or those skills more closely tied to education standards. The differences and similarities should be seen within the overall educational setting.

I'm interested in the internal tensions and contradictions (paradoxes, maybe) of standards-based instruction where we define what students need to know and be able to do with the idea that we identify what students needs are. This ties in with equity. In world history we address equity in part by moving away from Euro-centric content, but we don't ask the question necessarily, of what students needs are. Resolve the dissonance, Jimmy T.!

PL is a vehicle to provide more equity in the classroom. If truly employed to meet the needs to students where they're at, it will create a greater sense of equity for students and the overall classroom community. I think authenticity is key. I liked when it was pointed out that this isn't seasonal, but foundational.
