John Ross Versus the Soul of the Cherokee

Jackson D. Crump

Ms. Collins

4th Period, American Lit. & Comp.

31 August 2018

Many weeks ago, John Ross became the leader of the Cherokee People. The spirits seemed happy with the outcome of the election, as there was plentiful amounts of food, water, and growth amongst our people. As the days passed, ROss began negotiating a treaty with the White Man. The Chief hardly fought for the Cherokee Land before he told the people that they will be forced to leave the sacred lands. The White Men wrote a treaty saying that the home to Cherokees did not belong to Cherokees anymore. Soldiers came to Cherokee homes and made them leave. The tribe was forced to a new land called, “Oklahoma”. On the path to Oklahoma, the spirits were upset with the Cherokee. Death took hundreds of brothers and sisters without remorse. The March to Oklahoma was years ago, but the effects still torments the minds of the Cherokee People.

The Tribe can not forget this catastrophe or the spirits will punish us again. To please the spirits, the Cherokee must remove Ross as Chieftain. Ross and his evil “Victory Party” have sabotaged the Cherokee for years. The destructive party even murdered Tom Starr. The Cherokee Print sent out a reporter to ask questions about Tom Starr, and he encountered two friends of the late Starr. John-Henry West states, “It has been written by misinformed writers that Tom Starr, during his early life, was a common outlaw and guilty of many crimes, which is untrue. Tom Starr was not guilty of anything except what he was driven to in the defense of himself or his people” (West). West is a very well known and respected member of the Cherokee Nation, as his grandfather was the most powerful Tribesman of his time. West’s statement has much weight to it, considering his status amongst the Cherokee. If West’s word wasn’t enough, the interviewer also spoke with Dr. George Washington Culledge. Doctor Culledge graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in medicine and practiced at Briertown, an Indian Territory. He was said to treat Starr and his family on multiple occasions. He stated, “One trait I admired in Tom was that he would never speak ill or slander any woman, nor would he engage in conversation with anyone doing so” (Culledge). How could Starr be such a respectful, respectable, and reverent man, and still be a criminal? It is because John Ross deems him so.

The Tribe must take up arms against Ross, or the spirits will punish them. The Tribe must take up arms against Ross, or the White Man will destroy the Cherokee when winter passes. The Tribe must take up arms against Ross, or the Cherokee will come to an extinction.

Works Cited

Native American Netroots, nativeamericannetroots.net/diary/1606.

“Cherokee Families of Rusk County, Texas.” Lindneux Painting, cherokee1838.tripod.com/thomas_starr.htm.

“Did the Cherokee Really Want to Emigrate?” The Cherokee Hot House, www.cherokee.org/About-The-Nation/History/Trail-of-Tears/Did-the-Cherokee-Really-Want-to-Emigrate.

“John Ross (1790-1866).” New Georgia Encyclopedia, www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/john-ross-1790-1866.

Andery Hernandez

Collins

4th period

August 29 2018

In the day of a full moon in our town, we the Wyandots, speak for our people, we founded freedom and equality before any white men came and took everything with nothing in exchange, we are our own character, we are the originals in this land, we shall keep our hearts and heads together. Le Chef Grue said “we are the example of self-determination and local sovereignty,a stronger role than those white men”. It is out of a rich democratic tradition by the political ideas that life emerged. We had encounter with John Marshall the chief of Justice of the Supreme Court; he has declared that we are dependent nation and that we need the United States to be our guardian however he also said that the federal government has the obligation to care for us, we possessed good land with valuable things, the reason why those white men want to take our lands. We had suffer enormously being in their hands, one of the reasons of why we need to choose a new chief that can protect us, and our lands.

Le Chief Grue has given us the opportunity to hear what he needs to say to our brothers and sisters, he wants us to get what belongs to us including lands, but we are the only ones who can decide which of these mens will be able to get what we need to live. Le Chief Grue has influences in all the tribes around Earth, he can be able to exchange things with the white men so we can keep our life, our lands, he has the skills to fight and many others, we can now see that he will be a good option to be the leader of our tribe. Do not forget to vote tomorrow after the sun has rises in its higher point in the sky, MAKE GOOD DECISIONS!!! BECAUSE WE ALL DESERVE TO LIVE HAPPY AND IN PEACE!!

Works Cited

*Johansen . “Native American Political Systems and the Evolution of Democracy: An Annotated Bibliography.” Exemplar Of Liberty, Native America and the Evolution of Democracy, 1991, 1997, ratical.org/many_worlds/6Nations/NAPSnEoD.html.

*Marsh , Thelma.

Jaxson Carter
Collins
4th Period
October 11 2018

Today the game is played with ten players on a lineup and more advanced play style and rules. Some people would compare the Choctaw tribe to the college team known as Maryland. Maryland is very popular due to high winning percentages and games won among the nation. The game of stickball came a long way from Native Americans as entertainment for the villages and tribes to a nation wide popular sport.
Following up on the University of Maryland and how the 2018 season went, Maryland had a record of 14-4. Maryland made it to the playoffs but losing to Duke in the second round 8-13. Even though Maryland didn’t get the championship for the season they still lead in total goals with 210 and an average of 10.44 goals a game. Ending the season with a total of 12 seniors, 4 of those athletes will live on the dream and go play professional lacrosse when the school year is over.

Work Cited
