-Peter McVries: Bonds the most with Garraty and saves his life multiple times. 
-Art Baker: A close friend to Garraty and McVries- he is the most honest and kind out of all the competitors in the walk. 
-Hank Olson: A confident walker. He starts off the walk mocking and making fun of other walkers and lasts in the walk for a while. 
-Gary Barkovitch: The antagonist that every character hates and wishes to outlast. 
-Stebbins: The illegitimate son of The Major and the most strange/mysterious walker; Garraty was fascinated about him throughout the whole story and tends to give Garraty odd advice.
