Subclaim: Workers did not achieve the American Dream because the jobs they found had little pay which did not allow workers to provide a good and healthy lifestyle for their families. Many workers were also immigrants and laborers who were treated unfairly by employers which caused workers to have no control over wages, working conditions, and the hiring or firing of workers.

History Evidence:
"There has come upon us a state of unemployment which is depriving fully three and one-half million working people of the opportunity to earn a living." (American Federation 2)

This quote supports my claim because it shows how a large part of the working population are not finding good jobs which is causing workers to not be able to provide for their families or earn a living.

English Evidence:
"When are you going to sell me that car?"
"Next week; I've got my man working on it now ."
"Works pretty slow, don't he?"
"No, he doesn't," said Tom coldly. "And if you feel that way about it, maybe I'd better sell it somewhere else after all."
"I don't mean that," explained Wilson quickly. "I just meant..."
(Fitzgerald 25 )

This conversation supports my claim because it shows how Wilson is treated badly by his boss, Tom. This was common during the 1920s for bosses to treat their workers unfairly.

Not all Immigrants achieved the American Dream during the 1920's. The American dream drew many kinds of waves of immigrants throughout American history. This was the dream of freedom. The dream of finding work, working hard and advancing themselves economically, and having their children start with advantages they did not have so that the children can begin their economic life at a higher level. The American Dream impacted immigrants by giving them a second chance at life and providing them with new opportunities.

The three roles we focused on are women, immigrants, and workers during the 1920s, and whether or not they were able to achieve the American Dream. All three to some extent were able to some what achieve it. Women were able to achieve two out of the three components of the American Dream. During this time, they were given a lot more freedom as well as opportunity. But, the reason women weren't able to fully achieve the dream was because they still didn't have equality between them and men. Immigrants tired to achieve the American Dream by settling in the U.S for new opportunities to create a better life for themselves and their family. The American Dream had effect on immigrants that did manage to achieve the dream by allowing them to work for money. Workers were only able to achieve opportunity by obtaining jobs but they got paid very little and were not able to afford nice houses and live a healthy lifestyle like they wanted. How they achieved or tried to achieve the dream is what made each of the roles unique.

In the excerpt, “A Flappers Appeal to Parents”, young women, known as flappers, in the 1920s were given the opportunity to break tradition and express themselves. The author states, “young women known as flappers rebelled against traditional ways of thinking and acting. Many older Americans were shocked by their behavior.” These young women were able to dress and act the way that they wanted to, but with that they were judged from the older generation because of the broken tradition. They wanted acceptance and understanding so that they could go about their lives without judgement. Even though flappers were being judged they had the opportunity to freely express themselves.

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel based in the 1920s. Its focus is on wealth, but also women have an underlying significant role. There are two main women, Daisy and Myrtle, that both had voices. Before the 1920s, any rights or any voice, they listened to there husband. Now, that's not the case. Daisy and Myrtle both voice there opinions straight up to their husbands. But, still the men had the power over women. Which is also shown in the book through Tom, Nick, and Gatsby. So, even though women had gained more of a voice, men still help the power and control of women.
