This snowman drawing was the first of Helga's art. She smuggled it to her father who encouraged her to document camp life by telling her to "draw what you see."

I chose this quote because it shows that the only way to survive was to stick together as a family in the death camps. With her mother by her side Helga was able to be an inspiration to all and survivor of the Holocaust.

Through her diary she was able to draw life in the camps which is very impactful today. Not very many prisoners survived the Holocaust much less have some sort of documentation of it. Her art was encouraged by her father and has been seen by millions all over the world. The author states, “her drawings depicted the horrors of Terezin like rations, disease, lice and bed bugs.”

Helga Weiss accepted the possibility of dying at just 14 years old. She waited in the queue at Auschwitz praying to die before her mother so she would not feel alone. She and her mother were sent to 4 camps in total: Terezín, Auschwitz, Freiberg and Mauthausen. She spent 3 years in Terezín sleeping 3 to bed and barely eating. However, with her mother, diary, and her art she was one of a hundred children that survived Terezín. (15,000 children sent)

In Auschwitz in 1944 Helga Wiess and her mother trick Joseph Mengele to save their lives. She lied about her age as a young teen, so she would be able to work instead of being sent to the gas chamber. Her mother played a huge role by convincing the Nazi’s that Helga was her daughter's older sister. This was one of the few stories captured in her diary. Out of 15,000 Helga was one of only 100 children that survived Auschwitz between 1941 and 1945.
