Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood." This explains Walters situation of how he feels. In the lyrics it talks about how hard it is to hide things and sometimes you have to let it out. He's also saying all the things that happened for for good reasons. For example, wanting to open a liquor store so his son wouldn't have to sleep on the couch, or that he could get his wife a set of pearls. But it don’t have to be.” This quote supports the theme because it lets the audience know that you have to work for what you want. You can have plenty of dreams but what does that do without action. Walter is talking to his mom about how there is a better life for him out there he just needs the support from his folks to help peruse it. Also, the environment and encouragement he has from his family can depend on his decision.
