When a teacher is not here, students are not learning.
Administrator: Teacher absenteeism is monitored on a regular basis.

 

The discrepancy between ELAR and Math is that the abstract nature in ELAR creates a teacher dependent content; whereas, Math is more concrete and can be implemented and practiced w/out teacher direction.

From teachers it has the potential to increase the gap and you have less time with your students. It definitely has an impact on student learning because it creates inconsistencies. 
As an administrator teacher absences can impact student achievement because of the inconsistencies with sub it may not be the same quality of education.

Administrator:
District wide, teacher absenteeism is being tracked.
 All campuses have access to the data.  The data  is reviewed frequently and is important to see if there are patterns and how it correlates to student progress.    Teacher attendance this year has increased over last year.

Student and teacher attendance rates are available daily.

If there is an issue with a specific teacher being absent, it is addressed on an individual basis.

Teacher:
If I'm am out, it feels like there is a disconnect with my students and a gap in learning.

We would like to see Statewide or regional data as well to compare with our District.

We have been discussing how we can zero in on other contributing factors for the data we have. How can we know for sure the data reflects only teacher absenteeism.

Resnik Families: If absences are extensive, we would expect and hope that the information would be notified. If our children are held accountable for attendance, we would want staff, as paid professionals, to also be held accountable. 

Goal: Personalize feedback to staff if there is a problem specific to absenteeism.

We notice more behavior problems in the classroom. There is loss of instruction time for 20-75 students. 

We think teacher absence  has a greater impact on students ELAR scores than Math scores because Math is more factual/logical/concrete, and ELAR can be more abstract and broader. When Math teachers are absent, the students are given practice skills that have already been taught such as multiplication facts or skills based worksheets. 

Teacher absence has a greater impact on student achievement in middle school than elementary because there is more students per that one teacher.

Parent:  From a district approach, how can the district provide real-time information for each campus' teacher absences and other necessary data? This training makes us think about what other variables are affecting student performance. It seems that at the high school, teacher absences are not correlated with student achievement. So, this training pushes us to ask what other variables are affecting student performance.
