Red Flag #1- All Natural

All natural is a red flag that is seen all too often. At a glance, it is seen as a great product to buy because it is "healthy", and this entices potential customers into buying the product. Natural does not always equal good. There are many things on this earth that are natural, but deadly.
Here is a very interesting article and interview I found on CBS news:
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/natural-food-labeling-misleading-consumer-reports-fda-lacks-regulations/

picture from:
http://naturallybesthosting.com/natural-products/

Red flag #2- Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias is when people remember only the things that make sense with our beliefs, but forget about or don't take notice of the things that do not. A good example of this is going to a medium and only listening to the parts that pertain to your life.

Below is a picture of Tyler Henry, a "clairvoyant medium" who does a lot of readings with celebrities. Here is a video of one of his readings with Jim Parsons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1H3o8RYAevw
Picture of Tyler Henry doing a reading

Red Flag #3- Appeal to Authority

Appeal to Authority means to use an authoritative figure as a way to draw people into buying into their product. A big way this is done is using people in lab coats in their ads, because they seem trustworthy and believable. In researching, I found a blog post about the power of lab coats, you can read it here: https://thebrainbank.scienceblog.com/2012/04/17/beware-the-men-and-women-in-white-coats/
Here is an interview done by Studio 10 about celebrities being used in advertisements: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GadFqEdytMA
Picture of Taylor Swift for a Diet Coke ad in 2014, which is an example of using a celebrity to appeal to authority.

Ideological support is when someone tries to influence people into believing their claims by telling them its moral, ethical, or politically correct. An example of this is the anti-vaccine claim- people trying to influence the public that vaccines correlate with mental illnesses, or make you physically ill.
Here is a video from SciShow about the science of anti-vaccination: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rzxr9FeZf1g
Also, here is an article from the Skepdic's Dictionary about anti-vaccination: http://skepdic.com/antivaccination.html
Statistics from Statista.com

A red herring is a way of deflecting a question about topics that someone cannot logically answer. They will answer with another question, or information irrelevant to the question in hopes of redirection.
I found a clip of Donald Trump being asked about how he plans to reduce pollution. In turn he asks the crowd if they believe in global warming, and moves on to another question, which is an example of a red herring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyulquUwi1Q
Picture from buzzle.com, found on PsycholoGenie.com

Reason for Belief #1- Simplicity

Simplicity is one reason that people believe in pseudoscience over science. Science is complicated, it is sometimes hard to understand. There are many words that are unrecognizable to many people, and the information can be time consuming and difficult to read for someone who is not familiar with science. It is a lot easier to find a quick explanation like being psychic, than to find the real scientific reason for something.
I found a TED Talks on the scientific approach to paranormal that I found interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyulquUwi1Q
Photo is of Carrie Poppy in the TED Talk video I have linked

Reason for Belief #2- Emotional Connection

Emotional connection is a very big reason for people believing. If you want to believe in something that means a lot to you, you're more likely to force yourself into believing something is real. For example, if you go to a medium looking to get answers about a relative who has passed away, you're most likely going to believe anything the medium tells you.
Here is an episode of Long Island Medium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hac3dy2jbPw
In Long Island Medium, emotions are always running high, making things easier to believe.
The photo is from an emotional reading in an episode of Long Island Medium.

An unexplained theory is easy for people to believe because it is technically not yet disproved, but also does not have scientific backing. An example of this is people who believe in ghosts, since there is no real explanation for why individuals have "paranormal experiences".
Here is a video of some unexplained "ghost" encounters I found by YouTuber Urmaker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryBnX5ihs-g
Here is a video from National Geographic called: 'Ghosts: is it Real' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AP7GgtEWXU
The photo is from a photo gallery from americasmosthauntedhotel.com of an alleged "ghost"
