LEE MEI YI
BS17110351

The conservation biology crisis happening around us is getting worse day by day and it's all caused by us humans. There's always new conservation biology crisis happening as we speak. From the video which states clearly that orangutans could be extinct in 20 years, which is a very devastating news, tells us that humans activities are killing the orangutans for our own benefits. The activities that we carried out for example bulldozing away the forests, deforestation, and illegal logging for palm oil had and will keep on destroying the habitats of the flora and fauna there especially the orangutans which can be found in Borneo's vast forests. These actions may bring benefits to our development and provides us natural resources however we must learn how to control and practise the right way to conserve our biodiversity.

Moreover humans, who are clearly lack of humanity and values, even held an orangutan named Pony(I think) under captivity and did such sickening actions towards a helpless animal and tied her up all the time. Based on the video we see that Lone, who runs the rescue and rehabilitation center, cares and hopes that one day the lost and clueless orangutans in the center will be rehabilitated back to the wild. This allows the orangutans to not be dependent on humans and get to live in the wild, where they used to be. The authorities and the society should also step in to this issue to raise awareness and work together as teamwork makes the dream work. Last but not least, leave your ego and let's go eco.

Our cleverness, our inventiveness and our activities have modified almost every part of our planet in a negative way. The video provides enough proof to show that humans are entirely responsible to the threat of orangutan populations in the wild. The massive expansion of palm oil plantations have cleared most of the natural habitat of orangutan. This loss of habitat is the result of economic pressures, man’s greed and ignorance.

Our sole responsibility as human is to protect the natural habitat and the biodiversity it contains. People and orangutans need the same alluvial habitat and in a human versus orangutan conflict, the orangutan does not win. This video also visualized another side of human behaviour which tormented the poor female orangutan “pony”. This happens to be the most sickening news on human behaviour and approach towards nature.

As a conservationist student, awareness of this crisis should reach the public in order to bring about positive changes towards nature.

Nurul Haziqah Binti Jamal
BS17110489

The video has awaken my consciousness about the ignorance of humankind towards the conservation crisis that is harming the earth. We may overlook these animals which are on the red list while aiming for a better life. With its low price, palm oil is the cooking oil of choice in many parts of the world. This profit comes at a terrible toll. Converting forests into oil palm plantations destroys the home of orangutans.

Our vision must not disrupt the wildlife because later the extinction of these orangutans will affect us. Educate yourself so that we’ll not be seen as an arrogant human instead, a compassionate creatures. Not just by stopping illegal deforestation, but also by raising awareness of conserving the ecosystem for a better world.

The Red Queen Hypothesis

The Red Queen hypothesis, also referred to as the Red Queen effect, is an evolutionary hypothesis. It proposes that organisms must constantly adapt, evolve, and proliferate to simply survive.

An example of the Red Queen Hypothesis would be one of the plants that evolve because of the toxins to kill off predators such as caterpillars. If the plant, is under threat, there evolved a new type of toxin to the caterpillar had no immunity, where most of the caterpillar will die. This victory would be short lived, as the caterpillar that manage to live, even if only a tiny percentage, would breed rapidly, this time with immunity towards the toxin and once again the tree would be under attack. That is simply to survive.

This evolution will occur to all organism simply just to keep their existence.

There are some positive impacts on these activities for example it can increase public awareness and also knowledge on ecotourism and how we human conserved our nature from dying and extinct. But what about the negative impacts? It does effect mostly on wildlife behavior and health from tourism activities. So,in my opinion, as world is changing and technology is developing, the value of wildlife tourism is decreasing and maybe in future there will be more habitat become nearly extinct like Orang Utan if we did not understand clearly what wildlife tourism should be and

Lim Leng Leng BS17110581
Orang utan is critically endanger. The reason behind it is the greedy human behaviour. In this few decade, deforestation had been actively undergoing for the many different reason. The main reason is the clearing of forest for the plantation of palm tree. The demand of oil palm is so high that many lands are sold off for the plantation purpose. The land they choose to clear off is our primary forest.

The second major factor for deforestation is illegal logging. This is because the demand of timber for the purpose of furniture is high. The furniture manufacturer will not care about the source of the timber whether it is legal or illegal.

Thus this will lead to the extinction of the Orang Utan. This is because forest is not only their shelter but their main source of food also. Orang Utan eat wild fruits in the forest. When deforestation happen, they will lost their source of food and hence will be starving and can’t undergo the breeding process.

Not only deforestation contribute to the extinction of Orang Utan but also the act of catching Orang Utan for the sake of fun. There are some people who went out of their mind and catch Orang Utan then abuse them, making them cry and scream for help. This had already make the Orang Utan emotionally trauma and lost their trust in human, making the rescue Orang Utan job harder.

After the rescue had done, Orang Utan will then need human care in order for them to survive. They will no longer be able to find their own food and the baby Orang Utan will need to drink human made milk. Then when they are released back to the nature, they will need to adapt living independently and survive on their own.

In conclusion, all these extinction of animal can be prevented if human can change their greedy attitude. The Earth belong to all of us including the wildlife animal and plant, we as a human that are gifted with a brain that can think and act have to protect this Earth not demolish it.

Only a handful of people are concerned and responsible for them. Based on the video, the main factor that caused the extinction of orangutans is deforestation. due to forest clearing nearly half its habitat is dead. Oil palm trees, due to the over-demand of the forest causing frequent logging for the cultivation of oil palm trees. To meet the needs of other human beings threatened, they lost their source of food and shelter. This should not be taken lightly, this is a serious matter that will affect the future of forests and other animals, especially orang-utans who are now in the red list of threatened species. In conclusion, throw away the ego and let eco for the sake of our earth.

This process is not new. It has been ongoing for centuries especially during the industries development .Nowdays , many natural ecosystems are being progressively razed ,bulldozed, and felled by axes or chainsaws until only small small scraps of their original extent survive .

The development that we have today has result in the loss of the wildlife’s habitat .

This situation had lead to the extinction of the wildlife such as the Orang Utans . The primer factor that causes this to happen is deforestation for farming plantations like Oil palms . Thousands hectares of green cover lands has been cleared up to fullfill human’s demand on food and residential as their population are growing up . Hence , the wildlife unable to build their house on the trees or hiding in the thick forest . Besides , they also lose food resources for survival. If this happen continuosly , the wildlife could not breed and ensure the their species .

Other than that , human cause disaster also contributes to this issue . Take for an example , those who are smoking are likely causes the forest to be burned .They do throw the ciggarettes near the forest . Intense and repeated fires easily kill a large proportion of tropical forests wildlife and detrimental to species regenerating vegetatively or from seeds . This had occured in Sabah few years ago (recently) where the firemen had found some tortoises were burned in that fire tragedy .

Next , there are still some international company accept the illegal timber . This could encouraged illegal logging and causes loss of biodiversity . Uncontrolled illegal logging activities lead to the extinction of species and habitat . This is because the destroyed ecosystems took a very long time to recover and perfect . Lastly , there are still local people want to keep the orang utan as their pet or even sell the wildlife to other countries - illegal haunting , in order to get more profits.

ELVY KONDIIM

BS17110052

ASSIGNMENT 2

RED QUEEN HYPOTHESIS

Red Queen Hypothesis is an evolutionary hypothesis. It proposes that organisms have to adapt ,evolve and proliferate not merely to gain reproductive advantage . This whereas the prey or predator constantly evolve together to achieve some sort of uneasy balance . This hypothesis can be seen in our daily life . For instance , in agriculture field ,the plants that evolve toxins to kill their predators such as caterpillars , If the plant is under prediation selection pressure or attack , it will evolve a new type of toxin which the caterpillar had no immunity towards it . Thus , the caterpillar die and the plant grow and survive . Inversely , if the caterpillar is immune to the toxin produced , the plants will be eaten and die .

The crisis that presently happening was the bulldozing for the palm oil plantation and also the illegal logging cause by unresponsible some parties. They cuts all the trees for their own benefits. Those people also not even destroy the primary forest but also they killed the Orang-Utans and even sells them.
The palm oil is really a destructive. Now, the primary forest are gone. Humans activities are the major factor that cause the Orang-Utans to be endangered and if this continue without any action taken soon the Orang-Utans will extinct. As Lone Droescher-Nielsen from Orang-Utans Survival Foundation says " this is cause by human disaster not cause by natural disaster" and i strongly agree with her. Actions need to be taken immediately to achieve a stable ecosystem.

CONSERVATION BIOLOGY: CRISIS PRESENTLY HAPPENING AROUND US.

ABIGALE HENRY BERNARD BS17110579

Based on the video, I summarize 3 major culprits that threatens the natural habitat of the Borneo's orangutans-altogether causing a conservation biology crisis; all 3 of which stem from human activities. The first, as mentioned quite unmistakably in the video is the bulldozing of primary forests for the sake of agriculture-in this case- for palm oil plantation. Now, although we cannot deny the benefits raining off of the palm oil industries in more ways than economical, however by the action of clearing forests has not only robbed the homes of the orangutans but has disrupted the ecosystem and its services also acknowledging the fact that the bulldozing process also eliminates any chances of new seedlings to sprout from any potential seeds that might have fallen in the soil. Thus, this results to the orangutans and other wildlife to wander away confused from what used to be their homes and into what we claim as 'our territory'; this in turn then causes humans to take matters into their own hands and eliminate what they call as 'pests'.
Which takes us to my second factor: the ignorant public. most individuals who are unaware of the idea of the crisis discussed are usually not exposed to it. So these individuals who have a very shallow understanding of the threats that they are to the biodiversity has unfortunate outcome. an example from the video is the orangutans being slayed or shot dead because for all they know, these gentle apes are intruding their homes or crops.
And finally the third is development. The ever ascending graph of human population demands more of everything (resource, food, residential areas, etc) and to obtain this is to clear the primary forests. By now we all know the domino effect coming from deforestation that has given us this conservation biology crisis currently occurring besides the threats it holds towards our orangutans.
The number of orangutans left in the wild is questionable but it is undeniable that it is decreasing if humans were to continue their activities. So, the question stands: what are we to do before it's too late?

Orangutan is one of the critically endangered species. The video clearly tells us the threats that they are facing. First of all, deforestation or illegal logging which keeps happening slowly destroy the Orangutan habitat as well as other fauna that live within the same area or region. This gives a great impact to the Orangutan where they are lacking of food source. Eventually, there will be no longer available food for them because of uncontrolled deforestation or logging activity and this can lead them to death if there are no actions taken regarding this crisis. The video also displayed an Orangutan named Pony who had been locked up by some cruel people. Its screams showed that it had been tortured and it was in pain. This is unacceptable. Animals too are well qualified to be treated in a good way. Both animals and humans are God’s creation. We need each other in order to live in harmony.

So, this crisis should not be taken lightly. We cannot do things that will benefit us (humans) but putting the lives of animals like Orangutan in danger. Remember, illegal logging and torment of animals are not a natural disaster but a human cause disaster.

They not just an animal but they also can be human's bestfriend since they have some similarity with human. They also have feelings and want to be loved by human. Unfortunately, human disappointed them by chopping the trees where the Orangutan usually live. Human rather put themselves as a priority than the Orangutan's importance to live. We can see here, human is the definition of selfishness. This is all because of lust for money, they willing to do anything just for money while Orangutan's habitat cost more than their projects.
Orangutan precisely need to be conserve. They deserve to live in this beautiful earth and to enjoy this gift from God while they still can. Human does not have the right to take those golden opportunity from the Orangutan. They should think before they do the cruel activities, they should have their sense of humanity, not just for the Orangutan but for all the species in this living world. Moreover, to conserve the Orangutan, they should provide a centre specialized for the Orangutan creatures and treat them equally with full of love. Deforestation is the removal of a forest or stand of trees for human needed . Palm oil is one of reasons deforestation occurred in Malaysia. Palm oil production is vital for economy of Malaysia , which is second largest producer of commodity in the world. Not only Cleaning of forests can destroy Orang Utan’s habitat , climate change is one of big impact to other animals and plants because they are forced to adapt to new environment. Risk of extinction of Orang utan will increase if human doesn’t take any action .

Based on the video that i watched, Orang Utan is the one critically endangered species which the statistic shows the population of Orang Utan decreases from year to year. The one of the causes that makes the extinction of Orang Utan increases is deforestation for palm oil plantation. As we can see as example like in our country, the size of forest spot become smaller from one year to another year. This clearly prove that many forest were being destroyed for other purposes such as palm oil plantation. This situation occur due to the high demand of palm oil in nowdays world.
Besides, from that causes also give some bad effect to the animals which live in the forest. They lost their home, their food resources and this will lead them to extiction. I think we as human should put ourselves on their shoes to feel what they feel when our home were been taken with other people.

Same as orang utan, the others wildlife went to extinct also over 20 years soon. Based to the National graphic, approximately 25 million wild animals were killed over a year. This issue is very apprehensive due to maintain the ecosystem. One of the crisis that always be current issue lately is the wild animals like elephant, tigers were crashed by the heavy vehicles. This shows the Human's carelessness due to their attitude when on the road. I think the best way to overcome this issue from getting worse is a responsible organization should take part in order to curb this problem such as make an campign about the important of the wildlife to our ecosystem. so, prevention is better than cure. Orangutan is the most critically endangered species in this world due to human activities such as illegal logging, deforestation and others. Deforestation, clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use. The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests. The forest is cutting down to plant the palm oil trees due to its high demand in the manufacturing industry. Hence, the wildlife unable to build their house or hiding in the thick forest . Besides that, they also lost their food resources to survive. If this happen continuously, the wildlife could not breed and ensure their species. It is saddening to see our mother nature being exploited in such a thoughtless manner.

After watching the video, i think that the main reason for orangutans to become endangered is because of human. Palm oil is used widely on a daily basis of human, because of that the need of palm oil increases gradually and grants a chance for the palm oil plantation company to earn more money by cutting down forest to plant palm oil trees. They does not even care about destroying the habitat of the orangutans and other animals. When the orangutans loses their home, they loses their food source too and when that happens they are forced to go back to what they used to call home and may be killed by the plantation workers. Besides that, not only palm oil plantation is threatening the orangutans but there are many others human activities such as logging, burning of forest, illegal timber farming, mining etc. To solve the crisis of the endangered animals not just orangutans, i think that we should begin at changing the mindset of human by education. Human plays an important role in protecting and restoring the ecosystem. Finally, we should spread the word and information about the importance of conserving our ecosystem all around the globe because nature is our ally and we receive benefits from each other.

Assignment 1
Deforestation
According to the definition, conservation crisis is when a species extinction and the degradation of ecosystem are proceeding rapidly and the pace is accelerating.

In my overview, the conservation biology crisis that happens around us are the mentality of certain human being that are only thinks for their self-benefits. Regarding to the video provided, we can see that human are clearing the wildlife habitat for the plantation and other activities. For me this activities must have the permission from the government to pursue the logging. Even when their application for the logging are accepted, the government must have a details procedure to do this kind of activities. Mostly, when our forests are cut down, most of these activities are not managed properly. for example, the wildlife that lives in the area is not immersed in the proper area of protection. This resulted in these creatures being threatened and likely to cause death.

It is not worth it when you've got something you want but at the same time you lose the most valuable thing for the entire nature.

RED QUEEN HYPOTHESIS
Red queen hypothesis stated that living this must keep evolving to keep up with the competition in nature.

Once the living things stop to evolve, it would lose to the other competitor which is keeping evolve.

As example, the parasite and host. Both are evolving, host are evolving to withstand the parasite while the parasite evolve to cope with the resistance produced by the host. Both must keep change genetically to keep up with the changes in other species in order to keep survive.

Assignment 1
Orang Utans have been catogorized as a critically endangered species by the IUCN since many years ago due to crisis raised by human activities, which in turn, conservation of Orang Utans has always been a challenge to human. The Orang Utans are facing an alarming rate of loss and experts believe if the rate of loss insists Orang Utans could be extinct in wild in a few more years to come. The ultimate main threads to the survival of Orang Utans is the loss of their natural habitat, forests, through many ways such as deforestation for human settlement, palm oil plantations, illegal hunting and illegal pet trade. In my opinion,
conservationists should exert more effort in preventing the loss of Orang Utans to persist in a more serious, urgent and sustained manner by focus on the existing practical conservation measures : rehabilitating and returning orangutans back into the wild and preserving current orangutan-populated forest. However, the timescale of management concerns. Reintroduction, which costs twelve times as much per animal as compared to protection of forest, was only a cost-effective strategy at very short timescales. For time scales longer than 10–20 years, forest protection is the more cost-efficient strategy for maintaining wild orangutan populations where habitat management and law enforcement need to be improved to prevent further population declines.

Assignment 2
The Red Queen Hypothesis suggests that organisms must constantly adapt and evolve to gain reproductive advantage and survive in an ever-changing environment. The hypothesis intends to explain two different phenomenas: the constant extinction rates and the advantage of sexual reproductive. One of the real-life examples is the evolution of the Peppered Moths from Biston betularia f. typica (white-bodied peppered moth) to Biston betularia f. carbonaria, the black-bodied peppered moth and vice versa. The evolution of the peppered moths is a consequence of air pollution during the Industrial Revolution. During the Industrial Revolution the frequency of dark peppered moth increased drastically while when the pollution was reduced, the light-coloured form again predominated. As what the Red Queen Hypothesis suggests, the peppered moths kept evolving according to the colour which can be a better effective camouflage in the environment to increase the chance of survival of their own species.

By far, the major threat to orangutan is habitat loss. This is mainly due to our acts that are completely against the laws of nature that is deforestation. Huge tracts of forest mainly primary forest have been cleared throughout their area and the land is used for agriculture particularly for palm oil plantation due to economic reasons.

Besides, unsustainable logging for timber is also happening for the sake of money. There are many ways to prevent that from happening , first the human itself need to stop their activity such as excessive logging for development purposes . This is because , if the activity is not being controlled , so the habitat of the Orang Utan will be ruined. In Addition, humanity is the value that should be applied here since Orang Utan also need a place for them to stay , like us , as a human being . Furthermore , from those human activity the ecosystem might be affected and it is actually might lead to extinction of certain species . Once their habitat is being disturbed their food resources and place for them to breed are also affected .So we should prevent all this from happening by working together to conserve our nature .Never let our beautiful nature being destroyed by our own hand .

Assignment 1 Conservation crisis
The rapid inclination of the population of orangutans in Borneo is one of the conservation crisis that has been happening at an alarming state presently. According to the IUCN red list, the orangutans have been reclassified as "critically endangered" due to habitat loss and habitat degradation.
Humans have been the main threat to the declination of orangutans’ population. The combination of economic pressure, greed and ignorance, and natural disasters has result in the mass deforestation. As the human population grows sharply, forests are being bull-dozed for farmland, palm oil plantation and urban development. This results in the loss of habitat of many animals especially orangutans. They not only lose their food source and their space to survive has become smaller but their family. Many baby monkeys have become orphans because their mothers have been killed during the clear cut of forest. They must have been suffered to live without their mothers. Only the lucky ones are being rescued and rehabilitate
Greed and ignorance are the main factors. Some palm oil companies illegally clear cut enormous areas of primary forest so that they can earn more. Moreover, some companies willing to pay more ‘under the table’ so that they can get timber from the primary forest. Some district chiefs don’t really care about the land whether it has forest on it as long as they get the money. The lure of money has destroyed everything. Many orangutans were killed by humans. Many orangutans that looking for food and shelter return back to their place where once their home is. But unfortunately, they were caught by the plantation workers. The workers kill them or sell them as pets. Besides that, orangutan also was used as a sex tool in the rural area. Orangutans are being sexually abused and even mentally abused.
Less people acknowledge the damage done to the wildlife. Some of the selfish people even said that rehabilitation is not worth. ‘This is not a natural disaster but human disaster’, said Miss Lone, the orangutans rescuer in the video. All their pains are caused by us. Should we as humans do something in order to help them?

After watched the video, we know that Orangutan is endangered species that have to protect from extinction. Habitat loss, this we can sum up why the species of Orangutans are endangered. Huge tracts of forest have been cleared throughout their range and the land used for agriculture, particularly palm oil that is found in more than half of packaged products in supermarkets around the world. Road development, illegal timber harvesting and unsustainable logging also contribute to habitat loss. As humans destroy natural habitats, we are hurting ourselves because it is contributing to climate change and global warming. The more trees that are cut down, the more carbon dioxide that goes into the air and causes the Earth to heat up more quickly. Consequently, temperatures are becoming more unpleasant for us as time goes on and additional greenhouse gases fill the air.

As quickly as humans can destroy natural habitats, we should be just as willing to put forth the effort to rebuild and attempt to replace what is lost. For areas that cannot be saved, we can assist in funding the creation of areas that will serve as a refuge for displaced wildlife instead. We had destroyed the animal habitat and also endangered other species. This is because of human being greedy and selfish just to pursuit material wealth and “happiness”. We didn’t realize our activities will destroy the natural resources especially due to deforestation. Deforestation problem in Borneo is very serious due to the palm oil plantation and development. In this video, orangutan is one of the species that had become the victims in Borneo. They loss their habitats and were forced to move to higher ground or other areas where the habitat conditions may be less suitable and predators are more abundant. Some of the unscrupulous man caught these orangutan to carry out illegal activities. I believe that many animals also facing this problem such as sun bear and proboscis monkey.

Albert Wong Yun Tian
BS17110487
As a kid, growing up with the idea of orang-utans as an endangered and protected species was basically common sense. Everyone knew about it. It was always "PROTECT THEM!" here and "TAKE CARE OF THEM!" there. As for me, it was enough as long I knew what was going on. This video has proved me wrong. Little did I know how much horror the orang-utans faced in their struggle for survival. Those gruesome pictures of the casualties of orang-utans to the horrendous acts of people really scared me. What really shocked me was the part where people used an orang-utan for prostitution. Those kind of acts make me sick. Not only are the human beings destroying the homes of orang-utans, but we are also responsible towards their sufferings. The orang-utans are also living organisms just like humans. This means all their sufferings will tend to lead them to suffer from PTSD. Basically, we humans are at fault. It doesn't matter how the government protects the primary forest because as long as you have enough money to buy that land from the government, then it's practically meaningless. The greed of men plays a strong role here. Deforestation and clearing programs for palm plantation has led many animals, in this case, the orang-utans, homeless. Why palm oil? Because it's cheap to plant and quick to grow. Which means faster income for men. The homeless orang-utans will follow their basic instincts and go to the place that was originally their homes. This usually leads to numerous slaughter of orang-utans because of the ignorance of the palm oil workers. Most of them usually panic and accidentally fatally wound them. Another major aspect is illegal timber. For me it isn't the illegal loggers who are at fault but the market that accepts illegal timber. If the timber market around the world rejects illegal timber, then by right it'll be pointless for the loggers to chop down protected forests. In short, we are the cause of the orang-utans pain and suffering. We started this and it's time that we end this! Education and awareness is important among the younger generation. As I quote "knowing is only half the battle".

Lydiana Sindih
BS17110369
Orangutan, as we know the only Asian great ape, is now facing extinction. Orangutans have lost their forest home because of human's greed and ignorance due to the composite effects of habitat loss through deforestation, illegal hunting and pet trade and palm oil plantation. The main threat today to the survival of orangutans is the palm oil plantation as it is using the current practice that involves clear cutting forest and this has pushed out the orangutans from their habitat causing some of them facing death. Why? This is because palm is a globally traded agriculture commodity that is used of all consumer goods which is high demand. We human destroying our mother nature and indirectly destroyed other mammals especially orangutans for the sake of our self to just fulfill our needs.

The destructive activities such as deforestation, illegal logging and others have caused not only the wrecking of the natural ecosystem of flora and fauna, the population of orang utan declines tremendously. If these threatening activities are continued, the extinction of orang utan species is imminent. Each of us must play the crucial role to protect wildlife. I urge us to work hand in hand, especially the collaboration between government and non-government organizations to solve the crisis of the decreasing number of wildlife. I am glad some of the countries had taken the initiative to build conservation centres as well as rehabilitation centres to protect the orang utan from being hunted, wounded and slaughtered. Orang utan should live freely and their habitats should be conserved in order to benefit the local communities and other species maintaining an optimal ecosystem. Actions speak louder than words. If not, the extinction of more wildlife will soon come true. At that moment, humanity will suffer regression and the negative impacts on natural resources. By then, nothing can be done to bring back the wildlife we cherish.

This in turn causes many species of plants and animals facing extinction, particularly the Orangutans. By clearing the forest unreservedly, we are contributing more to pollution, poaching activities and illegal animal hunting. Destruction of forests could also causes wildlife animals to migrate and move towards local settlements to seek for shelter and food. Their simple act of surviving the wild is considered a threat towards uneducated people, which may explains some of the animal cruelty that befalls on them. If we continue to let our forest be destroyed without any conservative or replacement measure, there will no doubts be more crisis that evolved from it.

Nurain Najihah Binti Abd Wahab (BS17110463)

ASSIGNMENT 1

This video clearly prove that many animals were suffered for the sake of humans pleasure especially the orangutans. Therefore, proper treatment must be done and operation on clearing forest must be ceased in order to restore the population of the species.

ASSIGNMENT 2

"It takes all the running you can do, to stay in the same place"

Red Queen Hypothesis in biology states that species continually need to change to keep up with competition. If a species would stop changing, it would lose the competition with the other species that do continue to change. The hypothesis intends to explain two different phenomena : the constant extinction rates and the advantage of sexual reproduction.

This hypothesis can be seen in our daily life. An example of the Red Queen Hypothesis might be one of the plants that evolve toxins to kill of predators such as grasshopper. If the plant, under a new type of toxin to which the grasshopper had no immunity. Most of the grasshoppers would die off and the tree would flourish. This victory would be short lived.

Assignment 1

Conservation Biology Crisis

Crisis such as fragmentation, lowering quality of forest, human-wildlife conflict, wildlife hunting, growing number of traditional village, agriculture expansion, mass nature tourism and habitat destruction are some of many crisis that are happening around us that will be the greatest challenge for conservation biology. However, all of the listed crisis are related to one another. This is because when fragmentation occurs means that new area in the forest area will be open and this will cause the lowering of forest quality. Newly open area means growing number of traditional village which leads to agriculture expansions. Agriculture expansion means chance for tourism. Mass nature tourism will scare the wildlife away and prevent them from reproduce because of fear to be harmed. Agriculture expansion also means destruction of habitat which will lead to human-wildlife conflict because wild animals will need to look for new habitat and source of food. This situation will affect innocent wild animals especially the orang utan. Orang utan could never harm human but human will certainly harm them. Human's selfishness causes the orang utan to live in fear and they were unable to breed since they have lost their habitat. Nowadays, the orang utan needs help from human to be able to breed and for their survival since the forest is not safe for them anymore. This situation would not happen if it was not for human's greed.

Assignment 2

The Red Queen Hypothesis

The Red Queen hypothesis, also referred to as Red Queen's, Red Queen's race or the Red Queen effect, is an evolutionary hypothesis which proposes that organisms must constantly adapt, evolve, and proliferate not merely to gain reproductive advantage, but also simply to survive while pitted against ever-evolving opposing organism in an ever-changing environment. The hypothesis intends to explain two different phenomena which are the constant extinction rates as observed in the palaeontological record caused by co-evolution between competing species, and the advantage of sexual reproduction at the level of individuals.
For example the relationship between a parasite and its host. Both the parasite and the host are involved in an arms race with each other. There is pressure on the host to evolve to become resistant to the parasite and there is pressure on the parasite to evolve ways to cope with the resistance of the host. Both species need to change genetically to keep up with the changes in the other species.

Deforestation and also climate change can lead to loss of habitat of all species including Orang Utan . Palm oil plantation are one of the causes that makes Orang-Utan loss their shelter and source of foods . And worse is that if there is no action done, they will completely extinct within 10 years. The main causes of this crisis is the loss of habitat of orang utans due to human activities such as deforestation, illegal logging and even hunting. Deforestation is mostly carried out in order to make way for agriculture and other development. But in this case, it is made for the purpose of agriculture which is for the oil palm plantation. Human cleared the forest and planted the oil palm for our everyday use as it will processed for our daily use products such as cooking oil, and others. This will caused the loss of habitat for the orang utans, as their main habitat are the trees. Same goes for the illegal logging, they cut the trees and for the orang utans besides losing if their habitat, they also have limited spaces for them to move. It is because trees are the linkages for them to move from one place to another. Not only losing their habitat, orang utans were also being hunted by human. They were killed for the illegal wildlife trade and also for food which is the so-called bush meat trade. In conclusion, orang utans will face complete extinction in few years to come if there is no action done by all of us.
