Question 2: How does this approach attempt to study human behavior and mental processes?
This approach looks into psychological traits like memory, perception, and language. Psychologists that use the evolutionary approach look at brain as a processing device and say it produces behavior based on internal and external factors. The brain has developed to what it is today by natural selection. Scientists say that the brain has evolved over time and is designed now to solve problems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB7ClUNL3Ak

Question 1: What is the background and history of this approach to psychology?

Evolutionary psychology was proposed by Charles Darwin in 1859.

He proposed that humans have social instincts that evolved by natural selection.

His work later inspired other psychologists such as William James and Siegmund Freud.

James based his work on instincts. He noted over time, both humans and animals, adapt certain instincts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_evolutionary_psychology
