I think student misbehaviors could contribute to this teacher's stress. It seems to me like there was some sort of "event" that occurred before this student started recording their teacher's reaction. I think his reaction could cause some students to improve their behavior (out of fear of getting in trouble), but I also think those students who were misbehaving may continue trying to test him (I overheard a student whisper something while he was still speaking).

Yes, I have attempted to lower my stress during instruction in a variety of ways. One of the best ways I found was to stop and breathe and count to 5 - to pause before reacting. I found that prevented me from further stress because I took a moment to collect myself before continuing on. I also created a SEL poster for my classroom which included breathing techniques to do when you're feeling overwhelmed. I found it not only helped my students, but also helped me to remember to stop and breathe when I'm feeling overwhelmed.

Ann M Brown, No, I do not think the student will improve. The teacher is this video does show any kind of care for his students. In chapter 8 of our text it was discussed that teachers that show that positive and reforce good behave it is then that student will respond positively to instruction and teachers will have less behavior issues in the classroom.

Instead of creating a safe learning environment and working with the students, he offered no help and only focused on punishing them if they "moved or talked" during class. I don't think it is a proper approach to enhancing students learning.

My stress level was very high when I was teaching middle schoolers. I was a new teacher and did not receive formal stress management training. At that time, I was teaching six classes in a row and did not take any breaks between periods. One of my colleagues suggested taking the students outdoors for a walk or playing a short activity before starting the class in the classroom. Her suggestion changed my life and the students. My energy level changed, and I was in a much better mood. The students were happier and had fun playing together. Breathing fresh air and playing with the kids under the sun was the best remedy to lower my stress level. It was a time to bond and catch up with ourselves.

The substitute teacher has probably had these experiences already with the same class earlier or even that same day that same day they had a rough day. I don't think the students will improve their behavior because they are going ti try to get on the sub's nerve and push his buttons to see what he is actually going to do to them if he does even do anything.

I got a lot of feedback from students saying "I'm always happy and smiling" Even though internally I'm not, I show up everyday for them. These students are human just like me, it's not up to them to take on my stresses, so holding myself accountable, I learned its important to show up consistently. I would get on my soap boxes sometimes, but from a caring standpoint, not a demanding one.

I had to reduce class stress in the class several times, particularly after major disruptions and one fight. I gave the students a short break, let several then state their feelings, and then they generally went back to some reduced level of work. I do the deep breathing part at times while I wait out the class - they have been conditioned that my standing quietly at the board is their signal to calm themselves down as we need to refocus.

From the video, I assume the teacher was having behavior issues with this class on a different day. It seems that the same behavior may have persisted in today's class, which brought the teacher to his boiling point. I do not believe that the students will improve their behavior because the teacher mentioned this was not their first time behaving like this. Some students do not respond to scare tactics and may continue their behavior just to get kicked out.

To lower my stress, I listen to music in between class a difficult classes. During class, I like to breathe, and I do it noticeably so they see that I am stressed and trying to calm down. I also tend to stand quietly and just stare if I am in the middle of a lesson. If they are being disruptive while doing independent work, I like to ask anyone who can hear me to raise a hand, and I do it until I have everyone's attention once I do I address the issue. These tactics tend to work in my classes and if not I like to have a conversation with the student or students after class to try and get on the same page I even tell them how their behavior makes me feel in hopes to start fresh next class.

I definitely have! If I feel overstimulated, I will definitely shut down, so stress management is important to me. I have stepped out into the hallway for a moment to get away from the noise and take a breath. I also teach secondary, so it is very easy to communicate to my students that the excess noise/minor behaviors are making me anxious/stressed and I'd like a few minutes where we bring down the volume. The methods in the video do seem cliche, but they actually work! I've found that taking a bite of a granola bar and taking a drink of water helps calm me down sometimes too. Students respond well when you make it look like you're not stressed (even if you're screaming on the inside)!

Part 1 Response: I think this is a tricky question simply because there is still a lot of unanswered information. For example, what exactly did the students do to cause this reaction in the first place? I doubt the outburst by the teacher is completely unwarranted. I also think the students' recording is sort of proving the point that the classroom was not necessarily following the rules.
I think if this is a classroom of high school students, which it seems to be, then the behavior will not improve. Students at that age don't seem to respond to this hardcore messaging.

Some of the methods I have used for my middle schoolers are having a couple of minutes of silence with heads down, allowing students to take a break, letting students listen to music and work independently to get out of stressful group work that is getting heated. Sometimes I have even had to ask another teachers just to step into the room for a moment or two so I can destress and prepare for a more reasonable response to an issue.

It seems like the teacher in this situation is a substitute. I know that oftentimes substitutes have a really tough job because when they show up to sub, they don't know what they are getting into because every class and teacher is different, and students will sometimes take advantage of subs by behaving in ways that would not be acceptable with their regular classroom teacher. Additionally, because it takes time to build trust and respect in a classroom, students also don't usually trust or respect subs in the way that they trust and respect their teacher. All of these factors can make subbing really stressful. Even if some students are intimidated into behaving due to this substitute's zero-tolerance policy regarding classroom misbehavior, in general I do not think that the students will have any more trust in or respect for him, so it would be virtually impossible to foster a positive learning environment. Getting students to behave out of fear due to threat of punishment is not a good long-term tactic for classroom management.

I have found that when I am doing a better job of having work-life balance outside of the classroom - finding time to do fun or relaxing activities and taking breaks/naps in my personal life - I am more able to bring my best self to the classroom. I 100% believe that the teacher sets the tone for class, and when I am on my A-game, usually the students are, too. Sometimes during high-stress times, in class I have played videos that lead the class through a mindfulness or meditation exercise, or occasionally I will surprise the students with a fun class where we just play cooperative games in groups. I also might design a class project that will allow students to be creative or draw, and that seems to calm students down, too. They always seem to appreciate these gestures because it shows that I understand how they are feeling (stressed), and this validation goes a long way.
