Prior Knowledge:

Students will have completed schemes in basketball in first year and so should be familiar with the basic skills and rules. Basketball is also becoming an increasingly popular sport In Ireland due to increased television coverage

Prior Skills

Students will be capable in passing and dribbling and other basic skills of basketball, however these skills will need refining and developing to a more advanced and technical level.

Prior Attitudes:

This class has proven difficult to manage however their attitude towards court and invasion games is better than that of activities outside of these games.

Rationale for Selection of Instructional Model: Teaching Games for Understanding

“The focus of the model is placing students in a game situation where tactics, decision making and problem solving are critical and skill execution and development are meaningful to the context of the game” (Cambers & Luttrell, 2013).

I have chosen to adopt this instructional model in my approach to teaching basketball as the students have already developed a good base skill level in basketball. By adopting a teaching games for understanding approach students will now develop their understanding of what to do and when to do it as well as practicing how to do it. The Bunker & Thorpe model (1982) highlights these features and outline that through teaching games for understanding students. In particular for this scheme I intend to put a lot of emphasis into the concepts of basketball that can be transferred throughout other games and skill that students will be able to bring to the scheme that they will already know. There is a big GAA culture in this school and through teaching games for understanding students will be able to use and transfer attacking and defending skills such as keeping possession and penetration (Chambers & Luttrell, 2013). Chambers & Luttrell (2013) also outline a TREE model approach to TGfU which I will adopt throughout the scheme, this model aims to outline an approach which should be adopted in the small sided games.
