The antecedents of musical theatre in Europe can be traced back to the theatre of Ancient Greece, where music and dance were included in stage comedies and tragedies during the 5th century BC. The rules for tragedies that we still use today were in fact established by the great Greek tragedian Aristotle. He was an aspiring playwright The singing, dancing and entertaining of the audience was done by the chorus. which consisted of masked identical looking men. The chorus offered a variety of background and summary information to help the audience follow the performance. All the chorus wore identical masks, because they represented the same character or group of characters.

Modern theatre incorporate modern topics and broach modern issues, bringing it to the light in a musical form. Ancient theatre also uses the same concept. Nowadays, theaters around the world are reviving old plays and ideas to connect them to modern culture. An example is 'Les Miserables', which was written about the French Revolution. However, they present it to be interpreted as a universal revolution, and allows a modern perception of war and revolution to old stories. Another example is the 2014 Broadway musical 'Hamilton' which narrates the story of the founding father of America Alexander Hamilton in rap form.

I think Ziegfeld, though a successful man and popular theater artist was extremely sexist and misused the submissive and downtrodden women. He used them as a beautifying element of his productions and follies. The women were described as 'objects of desire'. I completely disagree with his belief that sex sells. In most of his performances women do not even perform or move. They are just kept as stationary objects on stage with barely any clothes, just to attract huge audiences.
