Artistic Statement:

My piece highlights the struggle of low-wage workers while expressing hope for change. The rattan sculpture symbolizes unity, resilience, and Cambodian heritage. The charred cocoon represents lower-class struggle, while the weaving illustrates their entrapment and punctures signify hope for escape. The organic rattan reflects the hidden truths of these workers, contrasting with the geometric rooftop of the idealized upper class. The rattan flowing from the white board symbolizes societal growth.

I like the video editing and stop motion mixed media style of Martha Colburn, I like how the artist uses printed out, hand drawn and a stop motion effect for her videos.

3) How is it cohesive with your other works? Visually? Thematically? How?

My overall theme for my exhibition is surrounded by Human Experiences and I want this piece to be the culmination and amalgamation of what most of my individual pieces are conveying.

3) What will you make it out of? 

Mixed media video editing, using film (i will film videos), drawings with oil pastels and markers.

What is your area of focus/theme/point you are making in this next piece?

• This artwork shows the emotional pressure and silent anger that many women in Cambodia go through. As a Cambodian woman, I feel like society expects us to be graceful, obedient, hardworking, respectful, and perfect all at the same time. It becomes too much. I want to show how all of these expectations build up inside, quietly creating stress and inner conflict that people often ignore or don’t notice.

2) Artist and artwork of inspiration. What will you take and use in your next work and why?

• I was inspired by Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies Bergère, especially how the woman in the painting appears emotionally distant, almost disconnected from her surroundings. I want to use a similar composition, but with a Cambodian woman dressed in apsara clothing, a symbol of cultural beauty and femininity. While the setting and appearance may look elegant, I want the viewer to notice her emotion, a quiet rage, a sense of being trapped in a role she didn’t choose.

• This connects with my other artworks through my continued use of red, which symbolizes emotion, anger, and power, and my ongoing focus on culture, identity, and critique of social expectations.

• The oil painting medium will allow me to create rich textures and emotional expression to help bring that feeling to life.

How hope lives on people's actions. When no actions are taken to fix the issue of low-class discrimination and segregation, hope will slowly start to die down.

2) Artist and artwork of inspiration. What will you take and use in your next work and why?

I will take inspiration from the artwork "Hope" by George Frederic Watts and utilize this artwork's features and recontextualize it in a way that shows slight hope but one that is dying down.

3) How is it cohesive with your other works? Visually? Thematically? How?

Visually, within my exhibition, there will be an abundant use of organic forms and lines, the use of different shades of red, including brown and orange, and by having certain artworks will be burnt. Thematically, it will all revolve around the experience, mostly negatively, experienced by low-class workers while acting as a beacon of hope that helps mitigate the mistreatment of low-class.

3) What will you make it out of? 

I will be using a mix of Fabric, wires, and plastic.

My focus is the divide between my mom and I after having lived in different countries since I was a tween. Feeling out of place within her household when I visit her.

2) Artist and artwork of inspiration. What will you take and use in your next work and why?

Sophie Pearson "I remember you in the ocean". The muddled strokes of the oil paint and mix of realism and abstraction.

3) How is it cohesive with your other works? Visually? Thematically? How?

It will have warm red and orange tones, focus on the distant relationship between me and my mother, the canvas will be the same material as all of the other 2D pieces.

3) What will you make it out of? 

I will use oil paints and thin paper

I really want to stick to Shaun Tan's works. Especially his work of "Never leave a red sock on the clothesline." I believe it's a wonderful piece and his works are able to depict hidden, more in-depth meanings with animal symbolism.

I think visually, it fits my theme the best as its style is between realism and cartoonistic techniques that is already evident in my current style.

Perhaps oil painting or some kind of painting material. Although I would also consider using digital mediums to try to achieve what I want to be able to capture in shaun tan's works as well.

2) Artist and artwork of inspiration. What will you take and use in your next work and why? My next piece will be inspired by the work of Gabriel Moses, an artist known for his powerful depictions of overlooked communities and working class struggles. What I find most inspiring in his work is how he captures emotional depth through composition, posture, and lighting often using shadow, minimalism, and specific color palettes. In my next artwork, I intend to borrow his use of dramatic lighting and symbolic posture to express the emotional of civilian laborers who are sacrificing everything. This will overall turn it into short film.

3) How is it cohesive with your other works? Visually? Thematically? How? This piece will be cohesive with my previous works visually. Thematically, it continues my exploration of Cambodian identity, focusing on neglected individuals workers, laborers, and now civilian fighters who form the backbone of the country. Visually, I will maintain my use of high contrast imagery, dark tonal values, and a controlled color palette, ymbolic colors such as red, black, and white. These visual elements tie all my works together and create a consistent emotional tone across my artistic portfolio.

3) What will you make it out of? I will make my next peice out of 3d pirinting sculpture, and for focusing on building small architect model. I will be creating this artwork as a 3D printed sculpture, focusing on building small scale architectural models that represent both war torn environments and the hidden labor behind reconstruction. The use of 3D printing allows for detail and conceptual layering each structure can symbolize different aspects of civilian life, sacrifice. This medium also lets me experiment with form and texture, making it possible to emphasize cracks, wounds, or protective layers within the sculpture mirroring both physical and emotional scars. Through this, I aim to capture the tension between destruction and creation, chaos and endurance.

In this next piece, I want to focus on the bond within my community specifically the relationship between our neighbors, elders, children, and families in the neighborhood. I want to capture a simple, beautiful moment in front of the houses where people gather and connect. It’s about appreciation for this closeness, but I also want to include the pollution pipe from the nearby factory, which constantly burns waste and affects our wellbeing. I want this as a contrast between the strength and the challenges in my community.

2) Artist and artwork of inspiration. What will you take and use in your next work and why?

I will take inspiration from Liu Xiaodong

The Roar, 2021 oil on canvas, 250 x 300 cm (98 3/8 x 118 1/8 in). His work captures real moments in life with a raw, emotional tone. I really like his large-scale compositions and how his figures feel active, they’re depicted as alive and living. I want to reflect that in my piece by showing a genuine, unfiltered moment in my neighborhood for example elders talking, kids playing, and daily life happening. I also like how Liu uses a muted but rich color palette and natural lighting to set the mood, which I will try to incorporate into my own work.

Thematically, this work continues my focus on appreciation but now directed toward community and shared experiences. This connects to my cardboard house piece, which also highlights the idea of “home” and belonging. Visually, I’ll continue using warm tones (especially orange and earthy colors) and work on capturing real environments and layered emotions. This will create visual cohesion across my portfolio.

4) What will you make it out of?

For the final exhibition, I want this piece to feel immersive, like a window into my neighborhood. The inclusion of the pollution pipe in the background will create tension, but the overall feeling will still be one of connection and resilience.

ANSWER: What is your area of focus/theme/point you are making in this next piece?

The theme I will be focusing on for my next piece is how, in Cambodian society, there is a strong expectation for children to present and show the best versions of themselves in the eyes of others, as it is a way to reflect how people perceive family pride and honor.

I will be taking inspiration from Nathalie Djurberg work. I liked the way she portrayed the natural cycle of body decomposition through a clay animation. Showing the gruesomeness of death and the nature of decomposition. I will be taking the irony and dark humor, as well as how she portrays her emotions through a short film as if it's telling a story.

This piece is cohesive with my other work because throughout my exhibition, I have shown sides of Cambodian society and my personal experience with these problems. Although each piece tells a different story when brought together, it tells my life experience.

3) What will you make it out of? 

I want to explore more with digital art, using a program called Ibis Paint, Draw Animation, and Art Set. To create either a digital art piece or a short animated video.

A loss of innocence when growing up, witnessing a loved one grow into a different person you thought they were.

An artist I am inspired by is KUDZANAI-VIOLET-HWAMI., A piece I am particularly inspired by is Atom Painting, seen above, i like the use of colors, animals, and pixes.

I will draw this portrait by pencil like my other artworks, it also relates to my main idea of my exhibition, where when we grow up we confront societal issues.

I want this piece to focus on the perspective of young cambodian children who are raised to bring honor to their family, but carry a sense of longing for freedom(?)

I want to take inspiration from one of Krystyna Sadej's mixed media fibre works and understand how she incorporated various mediums such as paint, yarn and plastic strands into her pieces

In terms of visual, it would fit in with my other artworks because of the same color pallete

I would like to further explore how it’s like to be a women in the Cambodian society, specifically depicting how it feels to be constrained and entrapped in a cycle of silent endurance of not having control over your own life without risking familial relationships.

I would like to take inspiration from  Bourgeois spider (cell), as I want to create a wire sculpture I want to replicate the circle cell shape that encapsulates a sense of internal imprisonment.

Similarly it explores how it feels to be a women in the Cambodian society where it’s very restrictive and unfair as a female. Visually it continues a trend of a monotonous color palette with accents of contrasts.

I plan to make a mixed media piece primarily using wire as I would like to make a sculpture.
