ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORTATION

Sustainability is defined as the ability to meet our current demands without affecting future generations' ability to meet their own. It addresses issues like environmental stewardship, social equality, and economic success, with the goal of achieving a balance between human activities and the natural environment in order to promote long-term well-being for everyone.

Next, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are also known as the Global Goals. The United Nations (UN) announced 17 sets of interconnected objectives in 2015 as a universal call to action to provide prosperity for all, end poverty, and protect the environment by 2023. These goals include a wide range of topics, including education, hunger, gender equality, and more.

This blog will be focusing on the 11th SDG, Sustainable Cities and Communities, with the topic of eco-friendly transportation. Eco-friendly transportation refers to modes of transportation that have a low environmental impact, such as bicycles, hybrid cars, and public transportation systems such as buses and trains and by using these sustainable transportation options allows individuals to considerably lower their carbon footprints while simultaneously contributing more to sustainable cities and communities.

To relate this to my personal experience, I am one of those who prefer to go by public transportation. As a student, if I wish to return to my home state, the bus will always be my first choice, partially because it is less expensive and has a lower environmental impact. Before using public transportation, such as 'bas muafakat' in Johor, I assumed it would be occupied and tough. I was also concerned that I would arrive late at my destination if I took public transportation. Plus, understanding the routes was difficult at first, but as I continue to utilize public transit, I get more familiar with all that is required for a smooth and enjoyable trip. During bus rides, I prioritize punctuality and comfort, staying patient during delays. Flexibility and optimism are key to enjoying the experience. Through public transit, I've gained insights into urban mobility challenges and improved my navigation skills.

Reflecting back on my bus trip, I found it to be a convenient and cost-effective option for transportation, despite some difficulties along the journey. I was particularly impressed by its environmental benefits, which included lowering greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable urban mobility. Looking ahead, I would plan my trip further thoroughly and look into alternative modes of transportation to improve future journeys. This experience highlighted the necessity of sustainable mobility solutions in reaching SDG 11, as well as the relevance of human decisions in creating inclusive, safe, and resilient communities. Overall, public transportation provides tangible advantages to both individuals and society, emphasizing the importance of adopting sustainable transportation options for a more sustainable, longer-lasting future.

CREATING GREENER CITIES - THE ROLE OF URBAN GREEN SPACES IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

In the previous piece, I explored the role of environmentally friendly transportation in creating sustainable cities and communities, as specified in the 11th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

Today, I'd like to focus on one of the most crucial parts of SDG 11: urban green areas. These areas contribute significantly to improving city life, promoting environmental sustainability, and boosting social wellness. Individuals and communities benefit greatly from urban green spaces such as parks, gardens, and recreational areas. They improve air quality, reduce urban heat islands, and promote biodiversity by creating habitat for a variety of species. These green spots also provide social and psychological advantages, such as increasing physical exercise, lowering stress, and creating communal cohesiveness.

Urban green spaces play a very important role in meeting the targets of SDG 11, that is, to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. They provide places for recreation for all sections of the population, irrespective of age or social standing. In addition, green spaces increase city resilience by reducing climate change impacts, such as flooding and heatwaves, in turn safeguarding people who are vulnerable. From a personal standpoint, I can attest that I have benefited firsthand from green urban spaces. The nearby city park provides recreation and a green lung to my dwelling city. Going to the park has now become a vital part of my daily life, as it provides me with space to relax and rejuvenate in nature away from the busy city life.

Although with their advantages, financing and scarcity of land for green spaces and maintenance are some major problems faced by green spaces in cities. However, novel solutions such as community gardens, rooftop gardens, and vertical forests are now emerging to mitigate this, where the maximum utilization of available space is conducted with local communities' participation in the creation and maintenance of green areas. Urban green space creation and maintenance are a collective effort needing to be instigated by the government, communities, and individual levels. Increasing green spaces in urban planning and participation in local green initiatives can contribute to the sustainable development of our cities.

Let us embrace the vision of SDG 11 by fostering greener, healthier, and more inclusive urban environments. Urban green spaces form an important aspect of sustainable cities and communities. The essential environmental, social, and health benefits that are developed by urban green spaces improve the quality of urban life. Prioritizing the development and maintenance of these spaces creates not only a sustainable city but a city that is vibrant and resilient. Let us contribute collectively to a future where urban green spaces become an essential component of every city.
