You truly embody the spirit of caring for the last, the lost and least.

Thank you for being a part of my SJI journey and witnessing my growth from a secondary 1 student to a young adult. I will never forget your kindness and generosity, a trait that I really admire and strive to carry out every day. Though I may have forgotten how to write history essays, I will always remember your engaging lessons and how it has inspired me to love the subject (i used to dislike it so much before secondary school) and pursue a University course that contains some elements of history within it (Politics, Philosophy and Economics).

Ms Lee, thank you for transforming my life and for showing us what it means to be a Josephian. I am super blessed by God for having you as my form tutor. May God continue to bless you with his unending love and may he continue to look after you and keep you safe. :)

-ckm/spammer ming

Thank you so much for being my physics tutor for HL Physics and I honestly think that I would not have scored a 7 in HL Physics without your support and guidance. As you may know (or you are about to find out), Physics has been a subject that I have been struggling with ever since secondary school. However despite that, you were even willing to offer remedial lessons out of your free time when you noticed that I was struggling with a lot of concepts after Prelims. Thank you so much for believing in me and for putting in so much effort to make sure that I do well for Physics in IB. Forever am grateful for that. Thank you so much Mr Phang! :)

-Kai Ming

Mrs Lee,

Looking back at the teachers I've had in SJI, I thought about you first. But I didn't remember you because of some grand act of compassion that compel certain students to put their teachers on a pedestal. Nor did I remember you for being a particularly interesting or inspiring teacher. In fact, I remember your reading comprehension classes to be very boring. I remembered you because you were the only one who never forced. You never used threats or humiliation or violence, never never never did anything to despise you or the subject.

I was never a very good student, and so I speak from experience when I say that most of my teachers used some sort of coercion to get me to do what they wanted me to do. Whether it be the parent-calling, the humiliation, or the violence, force seemed to be a constant in my secondary school life. Only you were unique. You never threatened to tear-into-two my essays or shun me into a corner. Always, you reacted with an infinite, Christian compassion, and for that I am incredibly appreciative.

I'd like to think that's why English was my best grade (A1).

~

Something else I remember: I remember you telling me in an essay comment that you thought that teaching English was teaching students to have a 'heart of gold'. I never really understood that, but after taking English Literature as an A level subject, I at least understand it more. I'd always viewed English as an objective, linguistic act but I can see it better now from a literary and humanistic perspective. I don't think many students at that age can understand this, but I think it's a shame that I only realise this two years after I graduated. Nevertheless, I'd like say thank you for and acknowledge your approach.

—Jaden (Class of 2018)

I'm definitely in a much better place because of your nuturing.
Thank you for making SJI feel so safe and fun.

Thank you Mr Seet for making my last two years at SJI so magical. As a council teacher, you taught me a lot about responsibility and why it's so important to put heart into the things we endeavour. As a Legion of Mary teacher, I learnt so much about how to navigate the difficult life of the modern Catholic. Your example inspired me to never let my faith waiver. I just want to thank you for saying that initial "Yes" when we asked you to supervise the Legion of Mary we were setting up. Even though you had a million other things to juggle, you allowed it to happen and now there's a legacy we can pass on to the future catholics of the senior section.
As you continue to take on more responsibilities and guide the school into the right path, I hope that you may always find joy in what you do and know that your hard work has touched so many people. All the best in your fatherhood and make sure your kid comes to SJI!

I wish I could write personal notes for all of you here but then I'd feel guilty if I forgot anyone in the process. But I just want to thank you all again for all the help and kind support you provided me in school.

I was probably not the easiest student to teach and I am sorry if I inconvenienced you or made your lives difficult in any way while I was at school. But I'm thankful that you didn't give up on me ever and I can really say that your hard work and patience really help me pull through in the end. Your dedication made my school life at SJI that much more interesting, meaningful and happy and I learnt a lot from each and every one of you.

I guess the best gift I can give to you this teacher's day is to say that I am well and that I am happy and fulfilled. In many ways, it is because of all of you - lessons both in the classroom and outside. I hope that you all too are doing well and taking care amid Covid-19. Please stay safe and well and I wish your families all the best as you guide the school through this difficult time.

Happy teacher's day

~QS

Dear Mr Andrew,

Time passes so fast, it's been 4 years since I've left SJI. But my memories of my alma mater have always remained vivid.

I'll always be very grateful for your guidance and unwavering faith in all of us. As our Mathematics teacher, you taught us the importance of being diligent in our work as well as having confidence in ourselves. When we faced difficulties in understanding concepts, you would spend hours making sure that we had enough practice. You were certainly a very strict teacher who had high standards of our work, but because of your dedication, we could see improvements at every milestone.

As our form tutor, I recall that you strongly stood for inculcating in us the values of integrity. When we as a class fell short of that, you were firm in disciplining us and ensured your message got across to us. Looking back, those particular instances were valuable life lessons. Those unconventional ways which you employed will definitely be remembered, but for the very reason that it taught us so much about being Men of Integrity.

Coincidentally, you were also my teacher-in-charge for Scouts. It was in Scouts that you entrusted me to take on the role of Secretary, where I found myself truly enjoying contributing to the unit in my small capacity.

On a personal note, you were a teacher who constantly encouraged and inspired me to persevere and never give up when facing obstacles. Till today, I'm humbled and grateful for the many opportunities and recognition you gave me- both in Scouts and in class. You've made an indelible mark in my time in SJI and I'm sure you'll continue to make a positive difference to the lives of your students as a teacher and friend to all. May you have a Happy & Blessed Teachers' Day! God bless you always. :)

-Shaun Loh
LE 401
Class of 2016
