They are easily accessible and surrounded by concrete structures, causing it to score low in the UNESCO inscription. The presence of too many modern structures makes it less appealing. To be honest, the rawness of the place seems to be fading.

Although not included in the UNESCO list, the Banaue Rice Terraces were declared as National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine government. How can they not? No matter how many modern structures are present, these rice terraces are over 2000 years old, built by the ancestors of indigenous Ifugao mainly by hand, and passed on from generation to generation — that alone is amazing!

However, there’s another problem. Most of the younger generation of Ifugaos do not find farming interesting and the older ones are now becoming weak. As a result, the “steps” which require constant care are now becoming more prone to erosion.

Since the Banaue Rice Terraces became a main tourist attraction, the locals, including the youth became more drawn into the hospitality industry as it seemed to be more lucrative. We cannot blame people who need to support their families. We can only hope that the government and the local people would unite to keep this cultural wonder alive.

Famous for its beautiful turquoise water, Kawasan Falls sits at the foot of Mantalongon Mountain Range, approximately one kilometer from the national road of Badian and at least four hours of trekking from Osmeña Peak of Dalaguete. Its cold and clear water cascades through layers of waterfalls emanating from Kandayvic Spring before going to Matutinao River and the Tañon Strait.

The waterfall system consists of two main cascades both with deep natural pools ideal for swimming. There are at least 1,260 hills (and maybe more) spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometres (20 sq mi). They are covered in green grass that turns brown (like chocolate) during the dry season, hence the name.

The attraction is exactly what it sounds like: rounded hills located at the center of the tiny island that go brown in color during the dry season so they end up looking like giant chocolate truffles.

According to one story, a giant who had been disappointed in love wept, and the hills grew where his tears fell. In another version, a pair of giants went to war and lobbed boulders at each other for days. The giants eventually resolved their differences, but the mounds remained where the rocks landed.

EXPLORING PICNIC GROVE


I’ve been here a few times since high school and I used to enjoy old-school skating at their oval. We later saw that the oval was converted to a motor parking lot. For most parts, I’m really happy that Picnic Grove hasn’t changed a lot since my first visit. In fact, it actually improved for the better. The huts, rails and walkways were regularly repainted and the entire place is clean and green as before.

HORSE BACK RIDING

It was our first time riding a horse when we went here in 2005. Their field is wide enough for the horse to get that chance to gallop a bit. The trainer made the horses walk more carefully most of the time for safety reasons. Having watched a lot of movies with horse scenes, it was nice to experience what it’s like firsthand.

VIEWING DECK AND ECO TRAIL

The viewing deck is practically the starting point of the Eco-trail. It allows you to get the widest view of Tagaytay and nearby provinces because it’s on top of an elevated corner in Picnic Grove. The pergola that they added there made the viewing deck look more elegant. It also lets you brace yourself for a long and tiring walk as you look at the length of the eco-trail on its right side.

Hanging Bridge and Zip Line
Several stops to take a photo or to simply check the view are expected here—especially if you travel with a group. The most popular stop, of course, is the hanging bridge. Picnic Grove’s shaky wooden bridge adds a thrill to your leisure walk. Stopping by in the middle of the bridge and then looking down below to see how high you are is a bone-chilling fun experience.

If you’re too lazy to walk and want to get ahead of your group, you can consider riding their zip line. This will take you straight to the opposite end of the eco-trail and will even spare you from the steep climb at the last part of the trail. If it’s the entire group that is too lazy to walk—they also have a cable car that can take everyone there.
