Week 11 Sustainability and Justice by Kristine Aquino

How might conceptions of sustainability (as discourse, as practice or as policy) have a ‘justice deficit’? Draw from Agyeman reading. Also cite examples from Case Study 1 on ‘environmental gentrification’ in Harlem, New York but can identify other examples too. Post a couple of key discussion points from your group.

Sustainability can be seen as more a top-down approach and regular citizens may not have the power to enact it nor see it as tangible since it has a future focus. Initiatives may not be accessible if people do not have the adequate time, energy or money. One example we thought of was a climate strike that happened in April which took place on a train station but disabled people were left behind so this shows how initiatives can be inaccessible even if sustainability is meant to be intersectional and inclusive in theory.

In the implementation of policies, there is a lack of consultation and therefore representation of the voices of minorities in this. As a result, while the policy might benefit some, it may not benefit minority groups and not fit their wishes for sustainability. This is a form of environmental racism, and therefore has a justice deficit.

Sustainable products are generally priced higher and may not be accessible for lower minority groups/ may leave them feeling as if they cannot contribute to sustainable practices. But on the other hand, a lot of minority groups have long used sustainable practices in terms of mending clothes, or making clothes from natural resources.

Harlem:
- Harlem used to be one of the poorest boroughs in NYC, which allowed the gov to dump waste facilities and bus depots- also brought up signs of environmental racism as Harlem is demographically full of high numbers of African Americans
- in order to stop people from joining gangs in the late 1900s, the gov built a large park in the city centre, however this was seen as very forced and left 3000 people homeless

When Governments try to employ sustainability practices or policies, it is surface level and comes across as preformative to tick a box. It is also not inclusive and comes at the expense of minorities and lower socio-economic communities. For example, the Harlem local government built a park to increase the health benefits for the area but it was a lengthy process and didn't meet the communities needs, instead, it displaced minorities from their homes in order to build the park and increased the cost of living so housing wasn't affordable for the community.
