You can see that the leaves have bright colors and textures the artist chose to utilize. The rich blue is bright with the contrast of the orange that is more muted behind the rich blue color. This painting has so many different symbolism that can connect to students growing and being supported by educators.

I picked this painting because the trees represent our students and the roots are the foundation from how they were raised and matured over the years. The trees still need to be supported, watered and cared for to continue to grow and reach their full potential. We as educators, will watch them grow, support and take care of them and watch them change over the course of the year. You will see the leaves change colors, leaves fall off their branches and regrow leaves or flowers to showcase that we need to get to know our students on a deeper level to really make an impact and support them the way they need to be supported to make those everlasting impressions in their lives.

“Honoring Roots. Nourishing Growth” directly connects to themes discussed in the module’s readings, who are our students? One relevant text is “Challenging the Politics of the “Model Minority” Stereotype: A Case for Educational Equality” by Yu Tianlong, which showcases the challenges of “model minority” and the stereotypes that play a part in the Asian American community. Which portrays Asian Americans to be successful, hardworking and obedient which is harmful due to not showing the challenges they may face or the obstacles they have to overcome in society which can be a harmful narrative. In summary, “it is the responsibility of educators to deconstruct the "model minority" stereotype and any other stereotypes or myths prevailing in education discourse, and seriously challenge racism, class division, and other structural problems. Social justice and equality must become a guiding principle for school reform and educational policy.” (Tianlong, P.1)

This painting does a great job capturing the concept of nature and time. The colors are rich and connect back to the natural aspect in the painting that showcases the qualities of what it means or takes to be successful in your own life path. This demonstrates personal growth and fulfillment but it can be taken several different ways.

I picked this painting because it shows a person rock climbing that demonstrates hard work, patience, dedication and sacrifices that are needed to obtain your own personal goals. This demonstrates personal growth and fulfillment but it can be taken several different ways. Again, this is what connects me back to the module’s theme, “Achievement for Whom?” Realistically, our achievements are typically measured by social standards or biases in our own community and society.

“Achievement” directly connects to themes discussed in the module’s readings, Achievement for whom? One relevant text would be “Want to Close the Achievement Gap?” by Linda Darling-Hammond which showcases the systemic inequalities in education which then leads to the achievement gap between different students of racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in different communities. In summary, “we cannot make major headway in raising student performance and closing the achievement gap until we make progress in closing the teaching gap. That means supporting children equitably outside as well as inside the classroom, creating a profession that is rewarding and well-supported, and designing schools that offer the conditions for both the student and teacher learning that will move American education forward.” (Hammond, P.18)

I felt like it’s a great visual example that showcases the overall problem of inequality within the school system and how these struggles can lead to an unfavorable outcome of a social predicament. You can clearly see the caucasian student have an "easy path" with no obstacles as far as we can see but when we compare the path with the colored students, you can see the obstacles and struggles these students have to face."

I picked this painting because it's a great representation of students who are deprived of advantages can lead and contribute to an improvement in a student's life at home and at school. This leads to the effects of students who are at a disadvantage simply due to their ethnicity. Some inequalities refers to unequal resources and services, access to education, individual development, educational achievements and outcomes and educational results that affect social and economic inequalities. As you can clearly see, the painting demonstrates educational segregation solely based on ethnicity. The struggles many other students face due to their ethnicity is so much greater compared to other students.

The struggles many other students face due to their ethnicity is so much greater compared to other students. “Inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. (UNESCO, p.23) Again, this showcases the struggles and leaps and bounds that so many students of the minority struggle with on a daily basis where at the white students have an easier "pathway" to be successful students and this is why we need to start to make the change as a society.

What I learned...

What I learned through collaborating with my peers and their comments based on their comments was that everyone sees art differently and that's okay. Everyone is entitled to their own imagination and interpretation of what they see because it is typically based on their own life experiences. My peers allowed me to dive deeper and really have a better understanding of the module by collaborating back and forth. On the flip side, I was impressed by some of my peers interpretation of their own artwork and the cultural or historical contexts that I had not initially considered which helped me connect to personal experiences on a deeper level overall.
