In fact, Germany wasn’t sure at first whether or not to participate, due to their extreme nationalism, but chief of Propaganda Joseph Goebbels recognized the benefits: It would make Germany seem more prosperous, promote disinclusion of “lesser” races, prove in front of an international audience that the Aryan race was superior, and humanize Germany to the world. Germany invented the Olympic torch relay, and used it to rally publicity and promote a German weapons manufacturer. However, the route the relay would go on, (through several other countries) would cause uproar. Jewish, Gypsy, and Black athletes were banned from competing until threatened with boycott from other countries. Even then, Blacks were known only as “Auxiliaries”. Few countries even participated, unwilling to promote the Nazi regime and take part in their propaganda. Ultimately, the Nazis succeeded, and as a New York Times reporter wrote: the Olympic games put Germany back in the fold of nations and made them more human again.

The flag was separated into three sections.The red symbolized the social idea of the Nazi movement. The white representing the nationalistic idea of the movement. While the black swastika symbolized the struggle for the victory of the Aryan men. The flag was officially the Nazi’s Party emblem on August 7th, 1920. The 1936 games were the first to ever be televised. The entire world could see these flags displayed in the stadium. The Nazi symbol was now known world wide. Hitler utilized these flags for propaganda.

In advertisements depicting the games, it stylized Germans as Greeks, and showed their civilization as the rightful heir to Greece’s supposed Aryan culture. This continued after the 1936 Games with the international release in 1938 of Olympia, Leni Riefenstahl's highly slanted documentary of the Games. Leni Riefenstahl, much praised by Adolf Hitler himself, was commissioned by him to produce the film. The propaganda documentary, won first prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1938. The documentary was far from the only demonstration of this. For instance: In a special-edition Olympics magazine, The Week (Die Woche), the cover depicted Germany as Olympia, making the association between Greeks and the Aryan race. In a map detailing the route of the torch-relay, it shows a blond-haired blue-eyed German in Greek out fittings. Through both posters and live international presentation, Nazi Germany promoted themselves as superior, and the Aryan man as the perfect human.

After the Nazi’s rose to power in 1933, they were awarded the ability to host the 1936 Olympics. The Nazi’s took advantage of this and based who competed for Germany on their religion and race. The new complex that was built was named Reich Sports Fields. Only 49 countries participated in these games. Countries didn’t want to be associated with the Nazi’s because of the way they were excluding people of a certain races and religions. This lead to fewer athletes competing in 129 events. Athletes like Jesse Owens shocked Adolf Hitler with his 4 golds and speed. The Nazi press referred to Jesse and other African Americans as “black auxiliaries”. The 1936 Berlin Olympics were the first ever be broadcasted on television. People around the world were introduced to the Nazi chants and salutes. They were now known world wide.

They were hiding their true racial and militaristic characters. Adolf Hitler became the chancellor for Germany and quickly changed the country to a dictatorship. They expelled all Jews, Roma, and other political opponents from their teams. This then encouraged other countries to boycott the Olympics if they had Jewish contestants. Some did just that, but others like the seven male athletes from the US. They competed for the fun of competing and the act of representing their country.
