- ELLs can start their studies knowing 1000s of words less than their counterparts.
- All students, even native English speakers, are learning and developing vocabulary as they progress through school. This means that ELLs are learning double - both what they peers are learning as new, and what they already know from previous years.
- receptive knowledge (understanding the meaning of a word) is usually much greater than productive knowledge (the ability to use that word effectively). Thus the process can take some time before reaching that second stage, compounded by the difficulty faced by ELLs in manipulating different word forms and more high-frequency words
- Types of vocabulary found in school: general academic words (relevant to all subject areas and schooling); subject-specific words (connected to a particular subject area); and highly-specialized or technical vocabulary (Extremely low-frequency words that are only rarely used).
