  • Punishments were very harsh. For lesser crimes, people were fined or put in the stocks, stocks were wooden frames with holes for the person's legs and sometimes arms. 
  • Being left in the stocks for hours or days was both painful and humiliating. 
  • For serious crime, people were usually burned or executed in public, usually in front of large crowds.

  • The people who were in trial or imprisoned they were put in trial to see if they were guilty or not. The process was to throw a person into a well. 
  • If the person was floating they would be accused guilty. If the person was drowning they were declared innocent. 
  • This was proved to be the way that god declared if the person was guilty or not.
